BBC News – Landlord fears rent arrears rise under Universal Credit.

this landlord got rich on the back of the welfare system by taking advantage of social benefits who  pay to house people in his flats, and houses. now he is rightly concerned as those same people will have the benefits capped and he wont be able to keep increasing the rent. maybe he will bring down his rent so that those who have their benefits capped can still pay it, but will he? he might.  he says he will not let out to those on benefits, but in poor wales, who else can he rent to? hope this universal credit will stop rents from rising relentlessly like in the past. maybe that might be a good effect of universal credit, one of many once it gets fully operational. surely no one can argue that it is ok for people to get income from social benefits that is more than the average wage of £500 a week? someone working have to earn  more than that once tax is accounted for. where is the incentive to get off social benefits if u can get that not working?

Yes it really pisses me off when the rightwing press goes on about the amount of money some people are getting in benefits when really most of the money isn’t going to the claimant but to some greedy landlord who’s charging the earth.

good point there, sarah. i think this universal credit is long overdue. there must be checks and balances in all things.
just as it would be bad to have rent control, it would be bad to have unlimited welfare. the trouble is no one is able to foresee what balances to apply nor to agree on it even if they do know.
