Why 2015 is a good year for durians – BBC News.

if anything makes me want to go visit malaysia it is this news, that there is a bumper durian harvest this year. i am very partial to kampong durian, the wild durian, rather than the cultivated hybrids. the headline says singapore, and i was rather surprised because singapore is good at a lot of things, but there is not enough land there for durian cultivation to make a harvest , let alone a bumper one. haha. it is only when u read the text that u see it is because malaysia is expected to have a bumper durian harvest, and naturally a lot of that will be sent to singapore to be sold there as the profits will be higher. it will mean it will be even cheaper in malaysia.

I too love durians. Nowadays they have so many types of durians from Malaysia; from D24, red prawn, mao shan wang….etc. etc. the list goes on and the taste is getting better and better.

hmm, i did not know they have more varieties than D24. but they are all cultivated hybrids, all full of flesh so that eating just a few is enough to fill me up. that is why i like the kampong durians. i dont think they have a name… generally they are either bitter or sweet. there are subtleties of flavour and smell, but the bitter and sweet tastes are all you can taste, as they are that strong. the cultivated hybrids are always sweet, i have yet to taste a bitter hybrid durian. for me, the bitter durian is the one i like, but enhanced when u eat an occasional sweet one just to off set it.

There is bitter sweet too. Just tell the seller you prefer the bitter one. They will choose one for ya. I don’t think they have kampung durians nowadays.

when i was in singapore long ago, they did sell kampong durians, but maybe now they dont now. maybe singaporeans dont like not knowing which ones are bitter and which are sweet. with kampong durians the only way to tell is to open one up and taste it. in malaysia, at least in sungei way, the village, u can pay 10Rm,(that was many years ago, i am sure it costs more now) and get to eat all you like on the spot. so u can taste everyone of them and because the fruit has so much less flesh, u can eat a lot without feeling full. i dont think there is any place like that in singapore, all you can eat durians. and i can believe that there are no kampong durians on sale in singapore. so many seeds, so much less flesh, and if u buy them by weight which is the way they are sold, they are not really as good value as the hybrids.

Some good durians, they are sold by weight. Others like D24 usually 3 for SGD 10. Or if there is plenty of durian, we can get 4 for $10.

there was a link where it says some stalls are selling one durian fruit for $1. so there are so many they are selling it by the fruit, instead of by the weight. how nice.

Yes, its true. Few yrs ago, we got to buy the 50 cents each durians. But those are not good one.

50cents!! that is heaven. i think all durians are nice, so maybe wait a bit more and prices will drop to 50cents each. when it ripens they will have to sell it off, so prices will fall. i remember i ate so much i just could not eat another durian for the rest of the season that year. haha.

U cant wait till the price drops lol. Each day if the durians are not sold, sellers usually will sell everything cheap to ice cream factory to make durian ice creams or bakery shop to make durian cakes. The durians here usually are sold fresh from My daily. Thats what I understand.

i have heard mention of these durian festivals … what are they? is it just having loads of durians and let everyone eat as much as they like? that would be great. though not for everyone who dont like durians. haha. and what are durian buffets, is it where u can get durian foods, like icecream, cakes, what else all made from durian?
