Actors in unprofitable show lose in bid to be paid the minimum wage – News – Theatre & Dance – The Independent.

london 8.10pm 2015 tuesday

the living wage has been in the news lately. made legit by the budget. and now we see the quirks that arises from having a minimum wage made official.

the judge ruled that actors are self employed and so not entitled to minimum wage.  truly when they say an actors life is hard, they are not joking. we only hear of the famous ones that make it, but below there are tons of people who have dreams of making it who have never done so… the stories of hollywood being a magnet for young and aspiring actors who are waiters and odd jobs people in the service industries or check out staff are numerous , enough to spawn a whole new urban legend. so it is not surprising that we hear of actors being unpaid. what is new is that they are sueing to be paid minimum wage at all.

it still amazes me to find people still wanting to be actors. but humans are funny that way. there seem to be an innately human urge to create, to want to create no matter what.
