leap year

29 Feb

london 1.06am 5C dry. monday 2016 feb 29

today comes only every 4 years, so it is quite an event, in the calendar, though most people dont celebrate it, unless it is their birthday. haha. this blog gives an elegant explanation of why we have leap years and why they are called leap years.

google doodle have a nice one showing leaping bunnies. haha. i dont normally be awake at this time , but i got very sleepy at about 7pm, and went to sleep. and woke up around now. it does disorientate me somewhat and not normally i would do if i were working. lbecause it plays hell with the working day. but now that i am not working, i can indulge and sleep whenever i like and wake up anytime too.

you also get to see films ( or half see, as i am not really paying much attention to it, whilst writing this) that come on late at night, which i normally dont see. like this one, called cirque de freak. about vampires. i got this in my wordpress reader, a blog by makadto, showing a japanese menu, which i noticed apart from its saying they dont serve people who come by cars, that the price dont include the tax. it reminds me how glad i am that i dont live in countries that do that. another one which dont include tax in its menu prices is america. ( i wonder, does europe do the same thing as america?)

when the tax can vary from state to state,  it becomes a shock when u get the final bill. why do they do that? give the prices without the tax added? it is because the businesses want to make the prices seem lower… so u dont get put off going to them, and also so they can blame the govt for the higher cost.

in london we dont have that, the menu includes the tax, called VAT.  it makes it seem the prices are higher if u just make a straitforward comparison, and at 20% the all in price can be high. i wonder if we all  were to know how much tax we pay will we eat out so much?

personally i like the uk system of including the VAT. it means there are no surprises when the time comes to pay the bill. and u know the true cost of the product. and if u buy fresh produce like veg and meat, u escape paying VAT too. that makes it all more of a bargain. all the more reason to buy fresh and unprocessed.

Pension comes last weekday of the month so I had to wait for today instead of Friday.

haha, yes it is an extra day to wait. though i found out recently that the state pension in uk is paid 4 weekly… so it does not matter how long a month is.
people who rent out their place by the month will have to wait an extra day to get it, but people who are tenants can get an extra day free.
