easy life in london

12 Apr

london 2.34pm 20.2C (its warm but that warm? i wonder, must be some mistake) tuesday 2016, cloudy

i was at the library and picked up the time out free magazine and saw an entry saying 12april  ben and jerry(the icecream shop) is giving away  free icecream. they do it every year.

i made a note of it in my calendar, and then clicked on today’s date and find it is 12 april today… my, my.  and it was 12.30pm allready. and they open the offer from 12pm-8pm. so i took the bus to marble arch as they have a branch there, inside the odean cinema. and there was hardly any queue. and i got a blueberry cheese icecream, 2 scoops on a cone. rather nice as it was not sweet at all… for me it is a plus. though of course i could not taste any blueberry( i dont think blueberry have any taste, at least i have eaten blueberries and have not detected any taste. ) but just for it being so unsweet is a blessing. it has a nice cheesecake texture though. if ever i buy an icecream from them, i shall go for this one. in the past i used to lament their icecream was so sweet, but by luck i found this one which answers my desire to have not too sweet icecream. i wonder if they should tell people about it, there must be a lot of us out there who dont like too sweet icecream. it is the reason why i dont buy icecream.

usually i go to leicester square to get this offer, as they used to have two branches there, but with all the development going on there now,two sides of the square is a blank space making the square appear very empty; there is now only one branch and the queue is long.   i passed through there hoping for another free icecream. there was no queue at the marble arch branch, but i did not feel brave enough to go back in the line and ask for another one. haha.

it was too long the queue for me, the leicester square one  and i dont crave icecream that much. so i went to the library instead. and passing through trafalgar square on the way back i took a picture of the portico ceiling of st martin in the fields church, and the cenotaph commemorating a world war heroine. i forgot her name. how easy we forget , even with a huge statue of her, i forget her name. makes me wonder about that guy who said life is not worthwhile if we dont make a mark on it… who is there to remember even if we did, i wonder? and how many of us ever get a chance to make our mark in history anyway. so does it mean all those lives are meaningless? i dont agree with him for sure. haha. i think any life is worth living… anyone living have survived all the obstacles that stopped their being alive ,and each person alive today is the result of years of evolution, and blind alleys, and paths not taken in the evolutionary tree.

but it is lovely to be alive, and to savour something so mundane as icecream and dont forget the cone, which i think is a big part of the enjoyment of icecream.  haha.

and yet i read that there have been a spat of suicides in a remote canadian town... is life that bad for them? maybe it is , if u are stuck somewhere in the wilds of nowhere with long dark winters. so maybe instead of them sending in psychologists and mind experts, maybe they should just give them free tickets out of there to enjoy a free holiday away from that place.

Since September last year 101 people aged from 11 to 71 have attempted suicide with only four health workers, none of whom have mental health training, left to deal with the fall-out.

most of us would think the long dark winters makes them so, but it seems even hot summers can lead to SAD. seasonal affective disorder. it seems it leads to insomnia and anxiety, loss of appetite, whilst the cold winter  version leads to depression. in fact i am not surprised that the hot weather can people sad. i have a feeling it is from the sheer physical discomfort from the heat.

the english weather seems to be the best then. and i am sure grumbling about it is a great therapeutic help too. and no one complains if we grumble about it , because it can be hot and cold and in between all the time. so one day u can complain it is hot, and the next u can complain it is cold. or u can complain it is rainy haha. u cannot lose. everyday there is something u can complain about. that should make anyone happy. haha.

added.6.55pm it seems the suicides in canada is by native canadians. natives who have been displaced from their traditional way of life. so it is nothing to do with SAD.

Hmmm so nice to get free ice cream. Ice cream makes ppl happy! Since the offer did not say one per person, I think u are definitely can get the second one. 😊 Be brave and daring, sir!!!

i asked for a vanilla and blue berry cheescake and was told i can only ask for one choice. i know there are two scoops for each cone, and was hoping for a scoop each of two choices, but if they are so strict about that i doubt they will allow a person to keep going back for a whole icecream. i supppose i could go back later in the day but you have to be really desperate for icecream to do that. though if i live nearby i might go for it. but generally, one must not take the mickey and push these free offers to the limit. otherwise they might withdraw such offers in future.i think it is generous of them to even give this free offer for 8hrs.

i dont recall salty caramel being available here in london, so it might be a singaporean only flavour. what about durian flavour, have B&J in singapore got that? or is it too smelly for them?but i can understand the salt and the sweetness must make for a nice combination.
yes, that picture of the books up high in the gallery all round the room is from the library. that kind of decor is fast going, as so many of these old fashioned libraries are being converted into something else. i can see why too, because no one has ever gone up there to look for books. there is a rope at the foot of the spiral stairs that lead up to it, so discouraging anyone from going up. otherwise i would go up there to have a look at what kind of books they keep there.

haha, i think uk is way behind the trend. here people stick to the tried and tested tastes and flavours. i think. though i cant help thinking the tourists form the majority of customers. maybe singaporeans are also very adventurous in trying new tastes.
