i seem to find free calendars

london 2.29pm 11.1C cloudy saturday 2016

i thought i shall drop by chinatown to see if there are any bargains. i was in the ‘new loon moon’ supermarket and saw this 2017 desk calendar.  it features the late thai king. there was no price tag on it, and i just asked the assistant how much are they and he said it is free. well, i was hoping they will be free. haha. maybe i looked thai…he did ask if i was thai. but i am sure foreigners too will appreciate it. perhaps they are only giving it to thais… it’s a very well constructed desk calendar. very strong and stable and look very good quality.

i did not know that the new loon moon supermarket have a facebook presence. it was mentioned along with their email and phone number and website on the calendar. that is interesting because i did not know they have this internet presence. in fact, it is only now that i realise they have changed their name. isn’t it strange that i have been going there for ages but never really take note of the name on the sign above the shop. it was loon moon before. i wonder when they changed ownership to the new loon moon.  well, this calendar certainly has done its job, if it is to remind people of this supermarket. i would rate it a successful advertising really.

found this interesting link about loon moon.

this giving out free calendars to advertise your business reminds me of all those free calendars that shops give out in malaysia. showing the horse racing days… i wonder if they still do it now. those calendars have such big numbers that fill up the whole box each day leaving no room to write anything.

and they have this pack of 24 instant noodles on sale for £2.

i just now cooked 2packs of it, and found it is very satisfying. one pack is not enough really. even though at 60mg they are larger than the average size. they are reduced because of their sell by date which is soon. normally each costs 30p.

and later simon woke up and i saw he too has cooked 2packs, and i saw him tucking into it.  and we both agree it is very nice to have these in the cupboard, in case we get hungry and just cannot wait . they are instant as it says on the pack. haha. they are eaten dried, rather than in a soup. it is made in phillipines. it is easy to throw in other ingredients, like cooked meats, veg, etc… and can make for a very satisfying meal.

Great instant noodles! Try it with luncheon meat or spam and a fried egg. I learnt to eat it this way in Hong Kong. They serve it like that with a sausage too at ” cha cha tengs” ie tea shops

these instant mee are everywhere now. the hawkers are using it instead of the other types of noodles. when i was last in malaysia , more than 10yrs ago,i can still find hawker stalls that make their own noodles, freshly made with each order. but that is a rarity now i think. i much prefer the rice noodles , the flat ones, or thin ones. but they are expensive at £1.25 per 400mg. though why i should think these instant mee at 10p per 60mg are cheap, i dont know. they are equivalent to £1 per 600mg. so roughly the same cost. just goes to show that they are more expensive as they normally sell for 30p, making that £3 for 600mg. now that i have gone through the maths, i realise they are extremely overpriced at their normal price. and these are lower priced than the others. some brands sell for 60p each pack. ordinary flat noodles are just as quick to prepare really. so i dont even know why i think of them as more difficult to prepare. and if u use a stock cube , they are just as good as using the msg loaded packages that is given with these instant mee . when u come to analyse it , it really hits home that they are not really that great. i think it is the picture on the front of the package, it looks nothing like what the final product comes out but it is very persuasive. and yet we all like them. just goes to show what good marketting can do. and also just goes to show why msg is so necessary for their success. i have a feeling that msg is addictive. ah well, as long as we know perhaps we can limit our intake of them.
reading through what i wrote i was tempted to erase it, as i sound so much like an old mother hen. haha. pouring cold water on this simple eating pleasure. but i shall let it stand as a reminder that every pleasure that involves eating seem to have its downside.

Forgot to say, remember to add chye sim ha ha😊

haha, i agree, at least we can get our vegetables to offset all that msg. though in london, chye sim is mega expensive. but it is such a unique chinese veg, i think its taste and texture is unique. there is no substitute.

In Australia now they plant heaps of chye sim. So when I go there the cost is the same in lil red dot. Perhaps you use spinach then…Chinese spinach we call “puay leng” or use watercress. Hope this helps😉
