advertising lights

london 1.01pm 5.8C cloudy monday 2017

read this just now , that the piccadilly advertising screen will be switched off till autumn 2017. they want to replace the present divided screen, with many adverts, into one big screen.

Piccadilly Circus lights

i wonder if a moving motion screen will prove to be a distraction to the drivers moving round that area. that is usually what we associate with a big screen that it will show big films, movies etc,  but i think it just means technology have improved so much that one big screen can be easily split any which way to accommodate any size adverts , moving pictures, films, etc  for any length of time and will be much more versatile and flexible.

but in the meatime tourists this summer wont be able to take pictures of themselves with it in the background. it’s become another distinctive image of london, along with the red double decker buses.

if u sit on the top deck of the buses that crawl up the lower end of regent st  to piccadilly circus, u get a real good grandstand view of the screen.

actually when u come to think of it, central london is not full of these advertising lights. it is quite remarkable i think, considering times square in new york is just chock a block full of them. i was watching the live webcam in times square and was struck at the amount of these flashing light adverts lining the buildings. you dont see that in london. i like that. all those garish neon lights flashing away make the place look like a red light district. actually, come to think of it, times square is a red light district. lots of hookers there or so i hear. haha.

they really switch it all off as shown in this video here.

Almost of the similar advertising screen had been switched off in my town except Trafic Police Announcement screen. I wonder if such advertising movie are harmful to anyone passes the roads, not only destructive to drivers but to walking people too. Thanks for sharing. Nice post!

any idea why it is switched off in your town? is it like here, to improve the screen, and so make more money for the owners? i am not a driver so dont know if they can be distracting and be a hazard. but as a pedestrian, i know i am distracted by them and also entertained by them, but not to the extant that i forget about the road traffic. also there are steps at the base of the eros statue, where tourists can sit and enjoy the display.

I do both drive and walk… the ad movies are mostly placed in a busy roads and so large in size, like intersections, in front of the traffic lights. they are so bright and blinding eyes. there is no place to sit around them and not all of the roads have sidewalk for pedestrians. I think the local Authority try to downsize numbers of billboards to regain the beauty of the city since they are scattered everywhere.
