lettuce pray

3 Feb

london 9.16pm 8.2C dry friday 2017

it’s been drizzling, but felt quite warm actually. very mild winter, so far.

amusing to read there is a lettuce shortage so much so that they are imposing a 3 lettuce limit on each customer. but none of the supermarkets that i went to have notices like that, so it must be only a few of them. though come to think of it, they dont have any lettuces for sale. so perhaps they might have got notices like that but took it down when they ran out of lettuce. they do have brocolli though. i cannot imagine anyone rushing out to stock up on lettuces. this is winter, no one i know bothers to eat salads now. salads are not something u eat in winter.

i remember recently i read of a shortage of zucchini, and i was thinking not many will even know there is one, as who eats them? haha. oh dont get me wrong, they are very nice veggie, i stir fry them, if i find them sold cheap, but not a veggie i would go out of my way to buy.ย

oh well, people here dont panic and stock pile things. unlike in asia where u can have a run of toilet paper of all things at the drop of a hat or slight rumour. here it is so rare to have any shortages of anything. this must be the first time i experience it. because it is the first time that there is snow in murcia, where all the veg comes from.

ย added . this article suggests that the limit of 3 lettuces per customer is purely advisory and is not enforced.ย

added 1.37pm 9.2C cloudy saturday 2017. read in today’s times, that it is the restaurant owners who are buying in bulk and the rationing is just to stop them from buying it all, and the supermarkets want to leave some for ordinary customers.

No wonder I don’t get to see iceberg lettuce from USA too. Strange! I have to resort to baby butterhead lettuce.

i guess there is a world wide shortage haha. what are baby butterhead lettuce, that is a new one on me. but also the chinese lettuce is lovely, its a wonder to me why people in s.e.asia bother to buy iceberg lettuce when they got their own lettuce. when i was a kid we would put bits of food in it ,wrap it up and dip it in the chinese sauce. the sauce is something my mom makes, the hakka name is cheong sam. it might be similar to hoi sin sauce.

i googled butterhead lettuce, so now i know what it looks like. has it really got a butter flavour? though how would anyone know when they drench it all in oliveoil dressing? or mayonnnaise dressing. i think the texture is the main thing, that is why iceberg lettuce are so popular in salads. for their satisfying crunch.

No butterhead flavor. But it is pretty in small leaves. Iceberg is better as it has more flavor and crunch – to me, that is๐Ÿ˜‰
