i got a fracture in my foot

13 Apr

london 5.08pm 12C cloudy thursday 2017

it has been a very eventful day. i got the on the same day appointment with my doctor, expecting they will give me another course of antibiotics.  but instead the doctor says it should not have taken so long, so she ask me to go to A&E (accident and emergency, i think). she wrote a letter for me to give to them and did not call them to make an appointment.  well that did surprise me, and make me think it is serious, and i started imagining me being admitted and having an emergency surgery, and wondering how am i going to let simon know where i am, as he has gone to his mum’s. she gave me a choice of the westminster hospital in fulham road or st thomas’ which is just over the river from me. and the c10 stops right in front of it. so st thomas it was.

but thankfully, it was not so dramatic. the doctor asked me to describe what happen, and suggested there might be a fracture, and so i was sent to get the foot xrayed. and it came out real quick, what with it being all digital nowadays. and sure enough. there was a axial compression fracture. the bone was pushed back. that force i had when i closed the door directly onto the big toe must have been very forceful. it hurt like blazes at the time.

so thank goodness we got a definitive diagnosis. and the treatment was to immobilise the fracture using a compression bandage, over the whole foot. and for me not to put any pressure on the foot , i have to use two crutches. he said i was putting pressure on it when i walk about, not that i could avoid it, but  that delayed the healing. i am to take the bandage off at night. and to put them back on the next day, and i got an appointment for 21st april thursday friday,to see the fracture clinic, when they will assess it. i am really glad for our nhs.

i dont know what i will do if i dont have it and being so well cared for. i got myself into this situation for not being specific about the trauma. but still, good of them to note that when it was not healing to be aware that it shows something more is happening in that foot.

and straight away referring me to the A&E. i see now that the A&E seem to be the front line of it all. it is where things get sorted out and treated and then handed down the line for follow up. so now my foot is all confined within its bandage, and i am home again. i feel it will get well, now that we have got the right diagnosis.

added. 9.21pm. and thank goodness i got to see A&E before the easter holidays. if my foot had flared up during the holidays it would be impossible to get this kind of attention. this afternoon, the A&E was relatively uncrowded, though even so, the wait to be seen by a doctor was 1hr.
