why, oh why are humans

london 7.21am 5.3C rain (still dark out there. sunrise 7.54am) saturday 2018

woke up early this morning, at about 5.50am. or so. it is very random when i get up, there is no set pattern.

yesterday i was out trying to see the lumiere lights. it is scattered all over central london and some of those places are not easy to find. or rather it takes a lot of walking to find them. haha. i went to leicester square first , then took the bus to fitzrovia, near the goodge station area, then took another bus to kingscross.

central london was busy with people, not sure if it is just the start of the weekend so is normal busy, or due to this light show. some parts like oxford circus and regents st closed due to the lights must be due to the display tonight. it plays havoc on the bus system.

most of the time, people end up crowding the restaurants, because the notable thing was the crowds in the restaurants. some eating places are jammed, and seem to be more busy than others. and the waitrose near granary square in kingscross seem to have hit the jackpot. it has a wine section that has seating for customers to drink the wine on the premises. so people was using it as a wine bar. and the bakery section was busy too. esp since buying a piece of baked goods means u can get your free coffee. haha.

i was thinking all this commercial activity going on is only possible because of the capitalist system we have here in uk. no one would bother to invest in all these eating places and put on this light show if not for the money they can generate from attracting people to come and linger in the area. otherwise most people would just take the bus to go home after work and not stay on in the city…there are lots of workers who come into the central london area and if u can keep them here after work , they will have to eat and there u have the customers for your business.

so that might make london not a shit hole . haha. i am certainly glad it is not a shithole.

i think places with a lot of corruption are shitholes in my book. so that means saudi arabia. recently i saw a tv program about it, and the corruption is widespread. there is always a kickback in every business contract. and i would imagine it applies to all the countries in the middle east, this kickback. it becomes a normal way of doing business there so that no one considers it strange or corrupt.

this article about a peace corp volunteer’s experience in senegal gives an insight into why some places are shitholes. both literally and figuratively. i find her experience is an eye opener for me. you dont read of such experiences because most accounts of africa try to gloss over its bad points and talk about its people and culture or its animal life in nature programs and scenery  in glowing terms. i got it via a link here , a forum on life in africa.

7.51am now, and the sky is allready brightening, even though the sun has not risen. so i can open my curtains now and switch off my lights and use daylight. i always try to use daylight if i can, unlike so many people who would draw their curtains, and keep it close even though or inspite of bright sunshine outside.

i can understand people living in the tropics closing their curtains to keep out the sun, because the sun is fierce where they are, but in this country, uk, to do the same is madness…yet, i see curtains drawn over windows here. maybe they have their reasons. but if one of them is they are sleeping, having worked night shift, then all i can say is there are a lot of shift workers in london who must be very rich because all these flats around me are not cheap…or it is because they have so expensive flats to upkeep that they have to work shifts and all hours of the day to pay for it and any time they have off is spent sleeping…so  that might explain why all those windows are shaded.

there is a flat here who have their bathroom fitted with two red lights shining out of the window which they keep on all day, and maybe even all night too for all i know. why? i wonder.is it some kind of uv light for their potted plants on the window sill? it must use up hell of a lot of money. even if they can afford it, it is such a waste of energy. but i guess they will say, shut up i can afford it, and if i want to waste energy i can and will and it is none of your business. haha. so all those  trying to save energy is just wasting our time because i suspect there are a lot of those people like him around. fortunately for me, i save energy for my own satisfaction, not to safe the world. haha. so i dont mind if they switch on all the lights. let them give more profit to their light company. might keep it in profits and let it not go bankrupt.

added. browsing more of the articles about shitholes, here is another one about egypt.
