i managed to get an extra voucher for a free meal yesterday, and so today i thought i shall go the kings cross food market, as i wanted to try the hainanese chicken rice. it is £7.50 and this time i remember to give them my container, which actually is a good thing, as it is bigger than what they give out. so even if they dont give me more, it was easier to eat, as the food is spread out . it is quite nice, but not really hainanese chicken. more like soya sauce chicken, with plain rice. hainanese would have the rice cooked in the chicken water used to cook the chicken so that u get the flavour of chicken. not to mention the rice would be fried with garlic and ginger first before it is cooked to make it aromatic.

it was the busiest stall there, i went early so there was no queue when i ordered. the ginger sauce and the chilli sauce was quite nice.

its actually quite easy to make hainanese chicken rice. pity these are not very authentic, but then maybe the locals wont appreciate the real hainanese chicken rice. the chicken is boiled, so is quite tasteless that is why the sauce that accompanies it is quite important to have. you dip the chicken pieces in the sauce to give it flavour. and of course the rice is the main thing… it is aromatic and rich , usually quite oily too, as it would be fried first. perhaps with lard, in the old days, with lots of chicken fat or pork fat. haha.

it does look a lot, so maybe it is better to bring your own container. theirs is quite small compared to mine.
