oh, a lovely morning

18 Jan

london, 9.56am 4C sunny (it has been -0.4C at 7.45am. ) wednesday 2016

bright blue sky and sunny out there this morning.

i was surprised to see an advert from malaysia airlines giving £375 rtn to kuala lumpur. when i click on that i found it is only for booking today, and only for travel within 1 feb to 28feb. but wait a bit and there might be another offer like this for travel in march.

and the ringgit is still good exchange value with the £ so this fare  is very good value. the cheapest i have seen for a direct flight.

pity i am not really bothered to travel nowadays otherwise it would be great to just dash down to kl for a  quick visit. most of my chinese friends have allready gone to kl as they want to be there on chinese new year. but to me, i much prefer it outside that holiday period. if you are the unmarried gay uncle, you are an odd man out at the family reunions of your brothers and sisters. and you are too old to be receiving angpows anyway…

also, prices go up, that is if u are lucky to find any hawker stalls run by the chinese to be open…for a short period, all the chinese hawker stalls are closed as they go off to their reunions. but after that period, prices come down, or go back to normal, and u get a suffeit of mandarin oranges that are left unsold. haha. and business slows down so u become a valued customer again. but i am not going there so it is all a moot point haha.

i got a chicken roasting in the oven now. looking forward to eating it. this time i did not buy it in its own bag. so i should be able to get that lovely roasted skin to eat. i seasoned the insides with curry powder. dont know if anyone do that, but it gives it flavour without overpowering it.

today has been such a lovely day, clear sky, crisp air, sunshine, that when i came back from the library and saw this article online about air pollution in london and alerts for the next two days of bad air, it made me wonder is it me or is it the instruments measuring it, or what!? how come i dont see any smog or pollution at all. am i kidding myself and all this pollution is invisible, but real? or is it something wrong with the instruments… before u start ridiculing that idea, i point out to you all the different figures that the weather websites say about temperatures in london. two of these gadgets that measure the temperature will give wildly different readings , even though they are quite near each other. now i ask myself why is that? it makes me very sceptical about instrument measurements. i dont trust them.

stock market crash, met office loses weather forecast for bbc.

historically , if u look at the chart, today’s drop is not the worst. in fact it is the least of the long losses suffered in history. so maybe the panic is a bit overdone. i thought everyone was saying the chinese stock market was over heated, so this correction should be  welcomed, but then we all know the stock market is a silly old thing, or acts like a silly horse, scared of its own shadow.

today also news comes of the met office being sacked as provider of weather forecasts for the bbc, effective 2016. its forecast has been so inaccurate that i myself dont use them. i use this instead. i think the met office costs too much. £30million a year, and the bbc just wants a cheaper forecaster esp as its license monopoly is in doubt.

the gamble by the met office to skew forecast towards a bias for climate warming may have cost it dear. or rather they were too ready to believe in the pro warming camp. as forecasters they should have been able to predict the lack of warming. but maybe such things are just not predictable. short term forecast of a day is accurate… and that seems to be the only thing accurate about any weather forecaster for the uk area. there are too many unpredictable winds here. just look at the recent weather. just a few days ago we had a high of 30C in london, hot and sunny, and within a day, that changed to cold and rainy, not only just rain but all the month’s rainfall in a day.rather fun for us who like variety and unpredictability… but must be murder for those who have to make a living predicting it.

i dont like changes in my life, but somehow when it comes to the weather i welcome it, because whatever it becomes it never gets so bad in london as to disrupt my life or create danger. there is never a fear of flooding or landslides or whatsis in london.

i have been idly looking at the MAS website for booking to kuala lumpur. and it is cheap, a return from 7 nov 2015 to 15jan2016 is £480 all in. it is a promotion fare, latest date u can fly from london is 7nov. they dont seem to mind how long u stay… unlike the BA promotion. pity i dont really want to go visit malaysia. otherwise these fares are tempting. on the other hand, maybe just as well i dont fancy travelling, i can think of it as saving me £500 haha.

when my parents were alive, i used to take these fares, at around the same time in nov or early december to fly back to malaysia. fares are always cheaper just before december, and i would stay over till after the new year. about 2months. that is long enough to make me feel really satiated. then for a period, fares went up , but it seems the fares has come down again at least for MAS. for a non stop flight, they are a good value. esp now when the ringgit is about 6.50 to £. it has not been this high for a long time. the converse is true, it is more expensive for malaysians to come here to london. and the stock market crash will bound to make those who can afford it, feel poorer. haha.

why go on holiday to europe in august?

16 Apr

John , from poole, is going to capdagde, south france, for a 8day holiday in august. it will cost him £161 rtn fare flying easyjet fr gatwick to montpellier. which is 3hrs drive away. luckily for him, he said  his host has offered to fetch him from the airport. When i read that his host is driving to montpellier to fetch him i thought  maybe the host originally offered to fetch him from the airport because he expected john  would fly to beziers airport, which is the logical choice. it is only 30mins from agde. wont he get a shock when he finds it is montpellier airport. but perhaps i am too cynical. haha.  maybe he really dont mind driving all that way to fetch him and back.

At first i was puzzled why john wanted to fly from gatwick, as ryanair flies from luton to beziers, for (i checked just now) £106 rtn. (In fact when i checked the fare when he first told me of his plans, a few months ago, it was £75 rtn.) But i have noticed that john do not bother to save money. he is not rich but has a rich mentality. i dont blame him. i think most british people feel the same way as him. (hope that is not a genralisation. haha. but i am afraid I have noticed over the years  i know my british friends, that it is prevalent amongst my british friends. that is why i make that generalisation.)

then i realised why he chosed gatwick,  he can get a coach direct to gatwick from poole, and so dont have to come to london and go out again. but it does mean a bigger airfare and having to impose a 5-6hrs drive for his host in agde. I  like that my friends are so generous with their time, but i dont take advantage of them and expect them to drive 3hrs to montpellier when a 30min drive is available. but then it is me, maybe british people dont feel that way… taking the view that if u offer to help me, then u shall go out of your way to do so , otherwise it is not really worth my appreciation. if help is given when it is no bother to you, it cannot be that much of a help , is it?

added. i got a reply from john about why he chosed montpellier. it seems his host in agde recommended it. and the journey times by car is 25mins to beziers and 53mins to montpellier. though when i took the journey by taxi (shared with 3others and it still came to about 25euros each, and that was in 1996.) it felt longer. that was why i thought it was 2-3 hrs. it felt that long. of course these times are operative only if they dont get caught in a traffic jam.
