free icecream

9 Apr

london 6.52pm 11C sunny , but it had been light raining all day. tuesday 2019

ben and jerry the icecream store have been giving away free icecream all today, from 12pm to 8pm. so it is still going on , about an hour to go and you can still get your free icecream. i had thought of going again, and in fact they said anyone can queue up again and again, there is no stopping anyone who wants to do that, as there are so many flavours, you will have to go again to try them all. i went once, and had a cherry garcia, and was really surprised when he scooped out a huge amount to put on my cone. really very nice. it has been rainy today, so not ideal weather for icecream.

this year only one store was giving out free icecream, in the past many other branches do it, but i wonder if those branches have gone, as their lease expired. they used to have two stores in leicester square, but so much development has gone on in leicester square, with whole blocks of buildings pulled down and rebuilt…

london is not shy of pulling down whole buildings and replacing it with new ones. you would think that the country is likely to preserve old buildings, but not so. council tends to give permission for anyone who wants to rebuild. this is because plenty of buildings are not architecturally significant. and i think council realises that for a city to be up to date and keep up with demand for new designs in office spaces, and retail spaces, and new uses,  they have to keep renewing it.

and i have noticed council is very willing to give any business a license. look at all the new eating places and streetfood stalls all over london . the idea seems to be let them all compete, and may the best survive. this also means the people who live here must be willing to spend, or there are so many of us here, the sheer numbers are enough to keep any business have customers. certainly when it comes to eating places, i see everyone of those central london businesses that i pass by and peek inside have customers in them. and i see so many buses moving along the roads in central london, when i was moving about today, that transport wise it is easy to move people around london and that must encourage people to get out of their houses and visit places or shop or eat out. that must be the secret of why some cities are so successful and bursting with people and places and businesses, whilst others are just dead.

added 10.22pm i googled the store location and it found 4 in london. at least the 4 that give free icecream. maybe there are other locations, but there is only the one in wardour st in central london. there is another in tower hill, but it is not participating in the free icecream. these are their shops, but of course u can buy ben and jerry icecream in supermarkets.

i have noticed all this talk of food does make me want to eat something. i think any one else will be buying food from the shops to eat. they will be tempted. but somehow i seem to be immune to it… maybe because i was not brought up here in uk, but in malaysia so i like malaysian foods, rather than the western style foods here like hamburgers, pies, pizza… if here there are stalls everywhere selling char kuey teoh or laksa,  freshly cooked in front of me, i too would be tempted to buy instead of waiting till i get home to cook it myself. haha. to me , when i get hungry out and about in town, i think of fish balls noodle soup or char kuey teoh, and that i can easily make and quite quickly too when i get home and it helps that i live so centrally so that it is quick for me to get home .
