christmas turkey

15 Nov

london 2.58pm sunday 2015 16C cloudy

this turkey is free, i got it from a voucher from the mail newspaper as part of their points system, it required 2000 points , which normally i would exchange for a £5 gift voucher, but this turkey costs £9 , 3.8kg so i think it is a good bargain.

i know it is a bit early to be buying it , and u can delay till later but i wanted to eat turkey and i wanted it now. haha. also i think going this early i am able to get a heavier bird that is labeled small. because the voucher is for a ‘small’ turkey.

there were a range of sizes so i chosed the largest size in the freezer. i think they all cost the same. i am very pleased at this bargain, because i have lately been craving chicken, and this turkey is a good chicken substitute.

i dont roast the whole bird, because it is difficult to get a juicy bird if u roast it whole. i intend to divide it into 3, and roast one, soya sauce another, and curry the third. that way i get variety.

simon made a suggestion that i roast the turkey ( i was thinking half a turkey would do for 3 of us) on 24th nov when a friend of ours is coming to stay and we can have a roast dinner for him with the trimmings. simon said he will do the cooking.

i was afraid the turkey wont keep for so long, it will be more than a week. but he said it will keep if kept in the fridge. our freezer is too small to contain it or i would put it in there and take it out nearer the time. i dont know how long a frozen turkey thaws out. i am hoping it will be 4days. and that would mean only 3days in the fridge after thawing. we shall see.

are tastecards good value for money?

6 Jun

london 3.20pm 2015 saturday

i am seeing this offer at the daily mail, saying i can get a tastecard, normally costing £80 which gives u 50% off or 2 for 1 meals in selected restaurants. all i have to do is collect 3 (or is it 4, i forget) unique numbers from the weekend daily mails. i collect the numbers anyway but for the points which i can exchange for money vouchers from supermarkets when i collect enough points. and they dont even ask me to pay with points to get that card, for a year’s membership. (i wonder how they make money then, unless they are so keen to get members just so they can get more customers booking at the restaurants that are in their plan. even at 50% it is still a lot of money u have to spend, not to mention, if u order wine, that is even better for the restaurant. it is a fact, that if u run a restaurant, customers are what u want, if there are no bums on seats, there is no business.)

but have anyone tried these tastecards? i was looking at their website to see what restaurants are included, and dont see any of the restaurants i like… like the many chinese restaurants in chinatown dont seem to be included. it makes me wonder if these restaurants may inflate the ordinary prices, just to offset the discounts they give with this tastecard. so maybe if u dont have a tastecard, you might like to avoid those restaurants.

ah well, these are modern day strategies and pitfalls. haha. first world problems as they say.

added. i noticed from the rules they ask customers to order the drinks from the menu rather than ‘tap water’. so i think if they dont inflate cost of the main dishes, the starters and desserts are a way for them to inflate the price of the food; they will inflate the drinks menu. it might explain why all restaurants seem to have very high drinks prices. and of course we all know wine prices have a very high mark up.

we all want low prices but i think it is not the point here. it is a voluntary activity eating out;

i can see the side of the owners too, they have to make a profit obviously, and no one have to eat out, so i should think those who do must expect to pay for the whole shebang. think of it as getting an experience.

added. 5pm. talking of getting experiences, i know those gurus that talk of what life is, say it is not buying things that gives u happiness but experiences. hmm. it can get overrated this experience thingy. haha. presumably they mean nice experiences, and not the experience of being bankrupt or being in debt, or falling ill, or being cheated , or being overcharged… so not all experiences are good, and so i say it is over rated all this talk of experiences are better than things.

i got an email today from dailymail giving me a voucher for a starbucks coffee. it was part of their promotion whereby u exchange a unique number printed in saturday’s daily mail and they will send u a voucher to redeem at starbucks.

i did that about 2or 3wks ago and never received the email with the voucher so i sent them an email telling them of it. i did not get any reply and thought well that is that. haha. and decided to write it off. well, today i got an apology from them and a voucher. which i hope to print off and redeem that coffee.

i was just thinking it makes life less stressful if u dont let it bother you.

these things happen and if i were a chap who wants to make my life hard, i would most probably get all angry and writing and phoning them and screaming at them.

but i have noticed that if u let them know and then sit back and forget it, (and in fact, i was thinking perhaps it is just as well, as those coffees are really full of suger) sooner or later someone will come back and correct it.

and if not, it might be a blessing in disguise , stops you from indulging in such a unhealthy activity. it certainly stopped me redeeming more numbers for the coffee as i would lose points , quite a big number too 75points, if i did.

something similar  happened a long time ago with ryanair . that time ryanair was infamous for never refunding your plane fare for whatever reason. it so happened that when i was booking a plane trip on their website, i inadvertantly hit the submit keys twice and got two tickets for the same flight. well, instead of calling them which is on a premium line and cost a lot of money not to mention get a lot of grieve from it, i just sent them an email telling them of it. i heard nothing from them and i just put it out of my mind.

much later i got an email from them telling me they will put the money back into my credit card. i find that is a good philosophy, just dont sweat these things. if it is lost it is lost , forget it, and if they refund you the money, well that is nice. it is only money after all.

perhaps that is the secret of a happy life. just forget about the lousy things that happen. haha.

Added.2pm. i am at the starbucks near the westminster cathedral,(the catholic one not the church of england westminster abbey), and using their wifi. it is very good, very fast, and also u can get online without having to register. and what is more, allows me to download gay websites, which a lot of other wifi wont allow. no wonder people like to go to a starbucks to get online.

(i spoke too soon, you still cannot get online to a gay website if u go direct, but if u go via a link in a email, you can. that was how i got through the first time, via a message from someone who wrote a message on my page and sent to my email from the gaywebsite. that is a useful thing to know.haha)

i got my eggnog latte. though this time, i did not get the whipped cream, it seems u have to ask for it. last time the woman asked me if i want it.

they are very careful to get your name and want  to look at the email with my name on it. so not anyone can just print multiple copies of the voucher and use it.

added. there is no eggnog in that drink. i dont know why but the name makes me think there is and i kind of look forward to tasting egg in it, but there isn’t. i dont know how other drinkers dont get a bit disappointed at it. starbucks have all these fancy names to their drinks but there is no substance to it. after my experience twice with these named drinks that dont have any of it in it, i am wise to it now and so dont want to drink them anymore. i wish they would put eggnog flavour in it. it cannot be that difficult to concoct and artificial flavour in the lab. they are able to invent so many chemicals that give u strawberry flavour, etc etc, it cannot be beyond them to make one that tastes and smells of eggnog, or pumpkin.
