salt is good for you, it seems

28 May

london 6.28pm rain 20.8C sunday 2017.

we all know of u turns when it comes to health advise, and it seems the latest one is salt. it seems it is good for you. suger is now the culprit.

most of us must have wondered, if we ever did question it, when we see nature programs where animals actively go looking for salt licks. it is a familiar nature program that shows animals gathering or travel miles just to access a place where they can lick salt. it does makes u ask why do we get advise telling us salt is bad for us. we know salt is necessary… we know we get cramps if we exercise a lot and sweat a lot, and then drink lots of water without salt… sodium is necessary for life. and yet we get bombarded with health advise telling us we eat too much salt and that makes us have high blood pressure, with all the attendant bad things that happen when we have high blood pressure.

except now they tell us salt is not the cause of raised blood pressure. it just goes to show that we humans think we know everything about science, it explains everything we think, but actually we dont really know much. haha.

the new culprit is suger, they say suger is not necessary for life…in one sense that is true in that we dont have to eat suger… it is because the body can produce glucose from carbohydrates… starchy foods… though eating potatoes is not as much fun as eating chocolates. haha.

from our track record of getting things wrong, and having to backtrack or make uturns with our health advise, i would take that condemnation of suger with a pinch of salt too. even though it does make a bit of sense, in that our bodies can make glucose so there is no need to eat the stuff. but if u go on the logic that if the body breaks carbohydrates into glucose, so it makes it,  it must be necessary… the only difference from sodium is that the body can make it out of other foodstuffs, so in that sense it does not need us to eat it. like vit D, it can make it so no need really to eat vit D, or foods rich in it… though foods in its complex form has lots of other things, like trace elements, minerals etc. eating the pure form may not be that useful.

the question really is how much is too much… and that must vary with the individual’s circumstances… it seems to me that blanket advise is not helpful. dont eat this dont eat that, or eating more than x gm is not good, or the opposite advise, eating more than x gms is good.

i think the most useful advise is dont let your weight balloon more than x amount for your age and height. that might be the most useful advise for everyone and the exception to my saying blanket advise is not needed for everyone. i would say that is the most useful advise for everyone. carrying a lot of weight is a huge strain on every organ and system in the body. i would say your weight is a sign of how healthy you are. try to be as slim as possible without going the other extreme and be anorexic. and how to stay within the weight range? just dont eat so much…

maybe a good rule of thumb is eat everything, and as much as u like but within meal times, and keep it to just one dish…no starters, nor desserts. (and cut it down to two meals a day if u cannot control yourself ). and dont snack between meals. perhaps have fruits in between if u cannot help yourself  and want something in the mouth.

for myself , i eat porridge for breakfast, and then whenever i am hungry. so no set meal times. porridge is so filling, i dont feel hungry till 4pm, when i can eat a big one dish meal, and then nothing till next day. or some days another lighter meal at about 8pm. and that is it. i dont think of eating again. today i had porridge at about 8am, and now i just ate 2 scrambled eggs when i woke up and it is about 7pm… i think i might eat a one dish meal (veg and pork over rice)again later tonight and that would be it.

katie hopkins

london 2014 wednesday

I read this evening standard article about katie hopkins’ twit about the ebola nurse being investigated by police. i thought it was rather funny observation. and quite true in some ways, especially when the yes vote for independance has said they have a good scotland nhs and splitting from the england would make their scots nhs stand better. so why do they have to send that ebola nurse to england?? haha.

i have not heard of this katie holmes but she seems rather a funny lady , saying a lot of commonsense things in a very witty way . what she said about that fat woman who could not find a job blaming people for not employing her because she is fat. and not wanting to change herself. she made a very sensible observation.

and what she said about M&S giving their muslim shop assistants the right not to serve customers who buy pork from the shop. i thought her comments were very sensible. if i were the other non muslims shop assistants i would resent these muslim assistants being given permission not to pull their own weight and getting me to do their job by taking over the till when a customer with pork comes up. they get the same pay and doing less work.

less than a year after the scottish independance vote and the oil price on which scots hope to get money to keep an independant scotland afloat has halved in price. an independant scotland would be in deep shit now if they had won the vote.

more utubes of katie holmes here.

One twin gave up sugar, the other gave up fat. Their experiment could change YOUR life | Mail Online

One twin gave up sugar, the other gave up fat. Their experiment could change YOUR life | Mail Online.

read this this morning. in the debate about healthy eating, i think we have got the wrong end of the stick. we call this food is bad, that food is good.

So, what were our conclusions? If you want to lose weight it will be much easier if you avoid processed foods made with sugar and fat. These foods affect your brain in a completely different way from natural foods and it’s hard for anyone to resist eating too much.

And any diet that eliminates fat or sugar will be unpalatable, hard to sustain and probably be bad for your health, too.

Sugar v Fat on BBC2 tomorrow at 9pm. (quote from article)

i suppose it is one way of looking at it.

i think that is the wrong way of lookng at it. all foods are good, it is the amount you take that is bad. moderation in all things should be the motto.

there used to be something called ‘a balanced diet’/  i wonder why no one mentions that anymore. it encapsulates a healthy way of life.

eat everything, but in moderation. i guess the argueing point is how much is too much. that would vary with different people i guess, but in the end, a rule of thumb may be this… leave the table still wanting more.

and eat when you are hungry and no snacking in between meals.

i think if u follow that u can ignore all these experiments with extreme measures.

One very important side effect of just eating enough and not bother with stigmatising this food is good or bad is that you stop obsessing about foodand you dont think dwell on it . i think if u think too much about food, it makes u hungry and want to eat.  like seeing adverts about food, it makes u hungry. Correction, not hungry, because you did not feel hungry before seeing the advert; but it makes u want to eat something, anything. haha.

spaghetti has suger in it.

21 Jul

london

I was reading this blog where he talked about suger and in his list, he mentioned spaghetti as having suger. i was very surprised and could not believe it… why would anyone put suger in spaghetti. so i had a look at my value spaghetti and sure enough, the guideline table in front of the pack  says 1.9g . then i read at the back every 100g contains 2.5g suger.

Going back to that signposting i saw it was for 75g . so not only do they put suger in it, but they deliberately put a lower figure by using a lower standard of measure. clever.

I am not that fanatical about wanting to remove suger in the common everyday foods we eat. everything in moderation is my motto. so no harm in suger in foods as long as u dont eat a lot of one kind of foods.

Basically dont add suger to your drink or food and you should be ok.

but it is still rather a revelation to know that even spaghetti has suger in it. i think take as a rule of thumb , any processed foodstuff will have suger , salt, fat in it. i mean even spaghetti has 1.5g of fat.

though it is not really anything to worry about, esp when people add parmesan cheese to their spaghetti and that is like 1000% more fat there. it is why i dont add cheese to my spaghetti bolognaise haha. or why i dont eat pizza either.

ignorance, incompetence, indifference

25 Jan

London

I have often said poverty is the result of ignorance. and have stopped at that.

But reading this article,

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/9821278/Its-not-poverty-thats-fattening-its-the-bad-eating-habits.html

It would seem most things in life is caused by ignorance, incompetence and indifference.

Take obesity for eg. It is not because u are poor that u are fat.
In the past, we can tell someone is poor by seeing how thin they look.

But now, it seems you can tell how poor they are by how fat they are.

The rich knows that fat is bad for their health, so they stay thin, or try to, even though being rich they can eat as much as they like.

Whilst what has changed to make poor people fat? It seems Nixon is at fault. He tried to do good by making the manufacturers reduce fat in their products, but as a unintended consequence of this, the food tasted awful without the fat, so they add suger to it… that made it tastier.

And so we get our present situation with processed foods… full of suger.

And that seems to play havoc with our insulin levels, which makes us store fat. The body can make fat out of carbohydrates and store it, so even if u stop eating fatty food, u can still be fat just by eating a lot of carbohydrates, like potatoes.

So ignorance is the main factor here.

What about competence, well u can know all the facts about food, but if u don’t know how to cook, u will still end up buying ready made foods as your own cookng is inedible.

What about indifference, well u might know all about it, and are a competent cook, but if u are too lazy to bother, and are indifferent whether u get fat, your knowledge and your competence wont make u avoid being fat, or poor for that matter.

All these factors can be applied to making u poor or rich.

Firstly, lack of knowledge, ignorance; u don’t know how to be rich. You lack knowledge how to make wealth.

Then even if u do know, u lack competence on how to bring it about.

So u get people starting a business and failing because they just lack competence at running a business.

Finally, indifference; u may like being rich, but u don’t really want to work at it…. You are too lazy to do anything about it. You may like and say u like being rich, but deep down u are really not that bothered about it to do something about it.

Finally, u might really be indifferent about wealth… u just don’t care to be rich. U might say, don’t be silly, everyone wants to be rich. And even those who say they don’t want to be rich, secretly wish to be.

I can tell u , there are plenty of people who have no desire to be rich. By that I mean having so much money all their needs and desires are taken care of, and still have too much money left over.

There are plenty of us who don’t care for that at all.Tthere are lots of things that a lot of people dont want. being famous is another example, u might think everyone wants to be famous, but dont u believe it.

The really clever people are those who are rich without being famous. That way no one knows and they dont get hassled whenever they go out, and no one tries to kidnap them or their loved ones.

5 bad foods and other thoughts about healthy eating

2 Jan

London
1.1.13 tuesday
Watching this tv program on bbc2, called nature’s weirdest, presented by chris packham, showing travellers to foreign countries being infected with parasites and bringing them back in their bodies, makes me glad I am not travelling now.

And that I am glad I did not pick up these parasites when I was travelling in my younger days. U might say many of us travel to cities and towns and so are hardly likely to meet up with these parasites.

But many of these parasites are spread by flies and biting insects and these will invade towns and villages.

There is one that lives under the skin moves about and cause the immune system to reacte to its presence by causing a swelling in the skin. So over the years, u might find different parts of your body mysteriously swelling and subsiding for no reason at all. The worm do not damage the body of the host, which is clever of it, because if it did and kill the host it wont do itself any good.

I guess it is up to your soul whether u will get infected. After all many have gone there before and came back unscathed, until u came along and picked it up. So why you and not the others? It must be your soul wants to experience it.

I saw ‘Up’ the movie on tv just now. I am glad I did not see it when it first came out. It got a lot of good reviews, with people saying it is so feel good a movie, but I just cannot believe the story line. A house that flew away on balloons, is impossible.

And all those talking dogs … it was so ridiculous, I switched the tv off and went to cook my dinner rather than see it to the end. It was too childish by which I mean it was creating silly sentimental situations.

2.1.13 Wednesday
I got an email from stumbleupon.com I subscribed long ago but forgot to visit it for sometime now. This emailed sent me some suggestions so I clicked on one, and came across this website, with the headline 5foods that are bad for you.

i did not realise it at the time, but it was an advert for a weightloss website and the video is a standard one used by all of them to catch the eye.
The link went to a weightloss website but the video is very interesting, even though it is a spiel for joining their membership, (quite reasonable I thought at £29 for a one off payment, and money back if u don’t lose weight.)
And their list of 5 foods that are bad for u is very good.

It is concentrated fruit juice,
Wholemeal bread
Margarine
Soy
Gm corn.

They are all processed foods made by manufacturers.

U might think soy is natural, it is from the soya bean and we in Malaysia all know it as the soya bean milk drink and tofu. In their natural state they are very healthy, we used to buy these drinks at the hawker stalls, and slabs of tofu in the wet market; but not when the manufacturers have got their hands on it. Haha.

As for the genetically modified (GM ) corn, it illustrated it with a picture of a corn on the cob. i think corn on the cob  should be ok, but all the stuff they add in foods by the manufacturer to bulk it out will be bad.
I don’t buy the suggestion by the website that GM is bad.

It is the amount of any foods eaten which determines if u gain weight or not. I think u can still eat all the above so called bad foods, and not lose weight provided u eat very little of it and mix it with a lot of other types of foodstuff that is in its original state. Like fresh veg, fruits, and foods u cook from scratch.

My suggestion for what it is worth is that they are not bad, per se. You can eat them just don’t eat a lot of them.

I find the secret to weight loss is really eat very little of any one type of foods. but have a vast variety of them, so that add them up and u can eat as much as u like.

In the video it is mentioned that sweet increased glucose levels and affect insulin production, all of which affect the suger levels in the blood and that have an effect on fat storage by the body.

So cut out the suger and that is why the concentrated fruit juice is not good for you. They have a lot of suger in them. I don’t hear them say don’t put suger in your tea or coffee. That would be the natural conclusion of not having sweets in the diet.
Needless to say I don’t put suger in my drinks, nor drink soda or squash drinks.

The bread? It is a processed food, like pasta, pizza.
I eat them, but I keep them frozen so I don’t feel I have to finish off the whole loaf at once, for fear it goes off.

Margarine, is because of its transfat. So now they are suggesting u eat butter instead. But again, don’t slather the butter on like there is no tomorrow. I bet u can eat margarine, but just coat it thinly and not pile it on. I spread it very thinly if I use it . I don’t spread jam on top of my magarine on bread. I just spread one layer and that is it.

Soy and corn will be in a lot of processed foods so best just avoid processed foods. And remember, cheese , olives are processed foods.
Quite a lot of foods are processed though u might not suspect at first.

U cannot eat fresh olives by itself, it is inedible.

So best to not eat a lot of them, because in many cases it is hard to know what is processed or not.

This guy says there are 5 foods that are absolutely so bad, u cannot even eat them in moderation.
He lists doughnuts, soda, French fries, chips(I think he meant what the british call crisps, tacos, corn chips), fried non fish seafood.

The non fish seafood, like shrimps, lobsters, clams, oysters, shell fish, he says is full of mercury. And parasites.

I like shrimps, but they are expensive anyway so that limit’s the amount I eat them. So I guess they naturally limit my intake of them. Sometimes it is good not to be so rich … because it makes u eat less of these expensive stuff and save your health. Haha.

If u are very rich u can eat loads of meat, fish, seafood, caviar, etc that cannot be good for you, just the sheer amount u can eat, it makes a glutton out of you. And u have to have great discipline to limit yourself. If u are rich, and u cannot eat all these things as much as u like, it kind of take the fun out of being rich, don’t you think?

I doubt their advise about not eating those things. Health wise it is not that big a factor. once in a while it is ok to eat them. Anyway, don’t get so obsessed about them, the amount of mercury poisoning is so small, u will die of something else first.
