flooding in north england

9 Nov

london 8.45am 3C sunny saturday 2019

the news is the flooding of north england, manchester and sheffield area, due to heavy rains two days ago, when it seems half the month’s (some reports say the whole month’s rain)rain fell in 24hours. 40mm.

i was reading the article about it, when i saw a graph included in it telling of the lowest recorded temperatures in uk, and it showed mar2018 as the lowest. i had to go back to my posts of that period to recall if it is really that cold. and it was in a way. but because it was spring, no matter that it was record cold , it did not feel that bad. even though  it was -4.7C but i suspect that record  must be somewhere else in the country, not london. london is likely to be warmer than that. my own experience was that it was not that cold.

all the other records were long ago, that is why the March one was so noticeable because it was like only last year. i thought the winter of 2010 was cold, but it never entered the records.

The lowest recorded temperature in the UK was recorded in December 1995

i got a call from np asking for my electricity reading.

30 Dec

london 7.42pm 12C wednesday 2015

actually this is the second time they called about it. they called yesterday and i explained that i want to delay sending them the reading until 1jan2016, when it will be 3months since the last reading.

i did not tell them that it was because i like to compare my usage and it is easier to compare when the days are the same. or rather it is more… how to say it?, what is the word i want to use. it is more a sense of consistency? a roundedness in the statistics? a order in the universe? haha.

anyway the lady yesterday said that is ok.

but today, just now,  i got another call at about the same time, asking me for the readings. so i again told her i want to wait and she said ok. i suppose she will call me again tomorrow haha. or not… seeing it is the new year eve and i dont think they will want to disturb people on that day.

ah well, ever since np (the company which provide me my electricity) had been fined £26million for not keeping the bills up to date, i guess they are trying to correct it or i read somewhere that if they dont their license will be taken away from them or something. but really, if people have problems with their bill, and wrongly billed or whatever, it is their fault… for not informing the company. there are plenty of ways to let them know what your meter reading is, and to sit back and not do anything when u know the meter reading should be read, and not send it to them, and then complain when the bill is wrongly estimated is your own fault. so there!!

and to take it out on the company when it is you who have been using up so much power and electricity that u are unable to pay it just because you dont want to save electricity… is your own fault too.

i know, i am not in a charitable mood haha. i am siding with the company which is not the done thing. everyone blames the company. i want to be fair to the company , some of it is not its fault at all.

but then nowadays everyone is blaming everyone else rather than themselves. where is the stoic attitude and the mindset which says life happens and shit happens and it is no one’s fault really, it is just life.

so when the rains are very heavy and the river bursts its banks, and you are flooded out, a bit of stoicism would go a long way for everyone to take. no point accusing everyone else of allowing it to happen. just ask that the authorities learn from it and get to put in place flooding action, but accept that no flood prevention is ever perfect, unless u want your river views to be blocked by a 6ft high wall running all along the bank… really if it happens it happens.

there is an article saying households should do their part too, rather than just scream at everyone else to do something. and then accept that sometimes these measures are not enough and just endure the flood and then clean up and get ready for the next one.

if u live in a flood prone area, it is to be expected. it cracks me up (and i know it is not being very sympathetic) when i read some family lamenting this is their 3rd flood in so many years, and i was thinking well, someone is holding a gun to their heads to make them stay in that place, then? why if this thing floods so regularly, i would soon establish a routine that takes account of it and just take it in my stride. so that i just incorporate it into my life and consider it quite a normal occurrence and what is the fuss about? eh? though if it were me, after the first year of flooding, i shall hotfoot it out of there.

of course people will say it is easy for u to say all this because u are not flooded out of house and home. but i think i shall most probably cope with it and then get the hell out of there, once i realise that it is prone to floods. and go live somewhere else. my soul just could not be bothered with these things, flood or fire, or whatever, which are yearly occurrences, or prone to it. once i find out, for sure i shall not bother to buy a house there, nevermind even consider living there .  there are lots of places in uk to live where u are not bothered with these things. or dont you know that?

if it is not flooding, it is snowing

13 Dec

london 7.11am 7.6C light rain. sunday 2015

saw a daily telegraph article about snow in the north england, and looked out and saw light rain here, and quite mild, at least in my flat without heating, the nhs thermometer says 18C. in fact i was woken by being too hot under the duvet.

the village that got flooded twice by storm dermond, now got snow. and i was thinking hmm, perhaps if it had snowed when the rains fell they would not be flooded. because the snow would trap the water and allow it to be gradually dispersed as it slowly melts. there is a lot to be said for snow when there is so much rain coming down. it regulates the release of the water over a longer period of time, allowing it to flow away and the rivers can cope with it. perhaps i should rewrite my heading to say , oh good it is snowing, so we wont be flooded. when u see the video of the flooded areas , u suspect it is a flood plain. people forget that they have built houses on a flood plain. or developers and council have ignored the implications of it.

even now with the govt trying to get more houses built, i read a report saying council and developers have been encroaching on the flood plains and allowing planning permission for the new housing to be built there. they should insist the buildings are on stilts.

perhaps instead of imposing so much money on countries to  to try to bring the earth’s temperature down a notch or two , they should be spending the money building houses on stilts, and flood barriers or strengthening their river banks.

and use the money to help building up those islands which will be flooded by raising their beaches or failing that to build a whole lot of infrastructure above ground so that they become a venice , a whole city built on submerged land.(now i come to think of it, those olden day builders of venice are to be congratulated their work have lasted a long time and still lasted even now. )

who knows those islands  may turn out to be desireable locations like venice has been. it must be quite surreal to see a city rise out of the empty sea . maybe with protective domes over some parts of it…when u approach it.

i remember in my childhood seeing attap huts on high stilts, and boats underneath in the villages in malaysia. at the time i did not think of it, not even to wonder  why they have a boat under the house miles from the sea. haha. but now i realise it was a very practical solution to flooding. the ground floor can still be used in between the floods, which may not occur yearly but once in 4 or 5 or 10 yrs. we could do that in northern lands, in preparation for the effects of global warming. and if it turns out we dont get the warming, or it occurs like 100 yrs later, why then no harm done. if it does come, we are well prepared.  that is a better strategy than to try to stop the temperature rise. that strategy is   like canute trying to stop the waves.

in the tropics there is no snow to contain the heavy rains, so flooding is the norm. it is just our modern ways that make us forget that flooding is always part of the life in tropical areas that are used to the rain and dry seasons. that has always been so.

now in uk, i bet if u ask people if they prefer snow  to floods they will chose snow. even though it brings a whole lot of new discomforts, but generally snow is not so destructive to property as flooding. unless we start going back to building houses on stilts, which might be the way forward for the future.

force of nature

4 Oct

london 9.11pm 15.6C sunday 2015

i have seen videos of the flood in Nice and antibes. quite a deluge and in a first world country like france. we are so used to seeing these in developing countries, like india, bangladesh, or thailand that it is a reality check to see it happening in france, and with people being killed too. makes u realise that nature is an untameable force, even if we forget that sometimes.

i saw in the weather map that there were very strong storms over europe, i was checking it because here in uk they were predicting lashing big storms for us, which turned out to be a damp squid. haha. as usual.

i dont know if the weather people  in France foresaw this storm over south of france,  i think they know it is coming, but they wont be able to predict that the river would burst its banks and cause this deluge. if not for the river bursting its banks, i think this storm would pass as another big rain, and that is that. but when the river burst its banks it becomes a big disaster.

tomorrow will be the start of paying for plastic bags. it will definitely make us use less. that is good. i have always used my own bags, so it wont change much for me. haha. but few people do it like i do, so we have to force them to stop using bags by hitting them in their pocket. we should have done it ages ago.

the downside is that we will have to buy rubbish bags, where previously i used shopping bags to keep household rubbish.it will mean more plastic bags used. how to prevent it?  i will try to see if i can use newspapers, but water will go through newspapers.

added. 20.10.15 i found a website that says there are packaging materials everywhere, the plastic that fruits are packed in, the insides of the cereal packages, etc, so i shall be saving them to line my rubbish in paper and not have to use plastic rubbish bags.
