London Is Turning Old Phone Booths Into Free Solar-Powered Cell Phone Charging Stations – CityLab

London Is Turning Old Phone Booths Into Free Solar-Powered Cell Phone Charging Stations – CityLab.

this is something new for me , who lives in london but have not heard of it before. i have to hear of it via citylab, in an article about where to charge your phone. haha. they use the sun to power it.

the only thing is that u have to hang around that booth till your phone is charged and it might take a long time.

you can charge your phone in starbucks too. there are sockets there and even though the guy i was sitting next to was using it to charge his laptop whilst he was on it, i am sure it can take a mobile phone charger too. there are some starbucks with a wireless/ contact charger too. in london where the sun is not always shining, rain even! it might be the better option. though it is not free in that u have to buy something.

not well known is that u can charge your phone in a library. not sure if they encourage u to do it, as the sockets are meant to be for students, or those who can pass off as students haha,  who do work on their laptop. but i know plenty of people charge their phone in the library that i go to. i dont see many people ,  except me, carry around laptops anymore, even though chromebooks are so light and small. or maybe they do but the laptops are so small nowadays i dont notice.

actually westfield in london, both shepherds bush and stratford branches, have lockers where u can charge your phone. they provide a key so u can lock them in and go away and do other things. all free too.

oh, i should mention EE stores can give u a fully charged gadget to replace the one you got , that will charge up your phone. u have to be a EE subscriber.

added. 19.7.15 found out they were 2014 runner’s up to the mayor’s low carbon entrepreneur competition. they won £5000. and the solar box in tottenham court rd began 1 oct 2015 is their first.

overheating sony laptops

9 Aug

london saturday 2014

I dont have that problem even with my old acer laptop which i bought 6yrs ago, and which has recently died on me.

it is slow and it freezes the page often, but one thing it did not do is get overheated.

maybe the two is related, because it is so slow it makes me less inclined to stay online on it for a long time. and i dont watch movies on it either, not because it is slow but because i dont like watching movies on the small screen laptops. a movie being 1.5 -2hrs long means u are online for a long time.

anyway, i am reminded on this overheating problem by this blog entry by renard moreau, he poses very interesting questions in his blog about IT , though he does not offer soluin tions.

would u get irritated if not downright angry at sony for not quality controlling their product so that it does not catch fire because of an overheated battery? I would. but then i am not so crazy to buy a sony vaio. sony laptops have one of the most expensive brands.

the ceo of sony seem to brush it off, all these recalls and reports of their laptops bursting into flames, by saying sony is still top of the pile. I suppose he has to, haha. he cant go round saying it is a terrible indictment on his management.

in case you think that is old story, the most recent warning from sony came in april this year2014. the trend towards ever thinner gadgets means that the battery is built-in and not removable. the downside is that if it goes wrong, the whole gadget have to be sent away and replaced. I am glad to see that my toshiba chromebook has a replaceable battery that is easy to replace by anyone.

even cheap laptops stop working if their batteries get too hot, so why cannot sony laptops do that???

i suppose all those who get fed up of overheating laptops should just buy a chromebook and solve all that problem at a stroke.

i have a feeling people will not tolerate all the old pc  tricks, like often having the page freezing, or having to switch it off and reboot. or constantly having to download new fixes, people are getting used to their mobiles and tablets operating seamlessly and would expect their pc to do the same.

that is why i think chromebooks will increase in popularity in future. it has a keyboard, and the screen is big enough to do most things in it.

another post on the same day.

London
14nov 2013 9pm.
This afternoon my laptop won’t log onto my part of the laptop.
When we first bought this laptop about 5yrs ago, Simon and I use this laptop. He does not use this now, but it was set up for two users. Well, my part of the user has kaput. So I lost all the programs that I have put in there. As well as the pictures and notes.
Luckily, I could still log onto simon’s part of the laptop and because he is the administrator, I am able to create another user.
So now I am using that.

Fortunately, I use chrome, so I am able to log onto chrome and get all my bookmarks and programs back as it is stored in chrome online.
And I use drop box and smile box to put all my pictures. So I still got them to see.
So generally, it is not such a disaster unlike in the olden days when once a virus gets to it all is lost.
I have no idea why my user whatsit is kaput. And not simon’s. at least I should be grateful the laptop is not completely kaput.

But the live hotmail that I was using to collect all my emails in one place is no more, and for some reason I cannot download another to replace it. Since they changed it to outlook.com, things have not been the same. It is not possible to delete and block the messages in the outlook.com site.

I have no idea how to transport my emails into the outlook.com thingy.

So I am on the lookout for some thing to put all my email into in one place. what is the name for that kind of thing?I don’t even know what to call it to search for it. Any suggestions?

added 17.11.13 it seems that program i was using is called windows live essentials 2011, and it seems it is prone to information attacks. it seems there is a something i should have downloaded to correct it, but i was using chrome and not internet explorer so never got any of the notification.

i was using windows live mail to access all my emails, but it seems it is not available to download from windows vista. (sigh) all these names , the same thing seems to go under different names.

In the meantime I shall have to go into each email address to see my mail. it’s a bother really as I have to type in the password each time.

Ah well, that is life. Haha.

added.18.11.13 found out how to block messages, and change the font size. takes a bit of getting used to as usual when there is a change.

On the upside, I got a letter from centrica, with a check for £55.80. Dividends for my british gas shares. Haha.
And another letter from british gas , the company, telling me they are sorry they missed the appointment to remove my gas meter and they are going to send me a cheque for £20.

Well, rather nice.

And then I went to victoria station and got talking to those guys selling labara sim cards and bought one. I think it was a bit hasty, just because my asda sim card tells me they are going to close it from april 2014 and I have to get another card.
I was looking for a sim card that pays as I go without any monthly charge. The labara guy says it is so, and only 5p a min for landline and 10p a min for mobiles. Cheaper than asda that is why I bought it.
We shall see.

Then at the sainsburys, I bought the crunchy peanut butter for 62p, and put the exact money in, and the machine say I put in 47p and I still owe 15p. So I called the guard and told him, and he cancelled the sale, and the money dropped out consisting of 2 20p coins, 1 5p coin and 2 2p coins. I put in 3 20p coins, and 2 2p coins. So the machine must have got itself mixed up if it gives me a 5p coin to replace my 20p coin.
Just as well I buy such a small amount and can keep tag of what I pay. Most people may not realise it, or begin to doubt themselves. Not me. Haha.

The lesson from this is don’t put the money in quickly… wait till the machine registers each coin, before u put in the next. I put in the money too quick that time.

Life is full of surprises. Haha. Quite fun if u get yourself together and be focused… otherwise it will make u feel paranoid that someone is out to get you, or u doubt your sanity, wondering if u are going gaga , not know how much money u put in the machine.

I practise mindfulness… being totally aware of the now and being always present in the present, and not let my mind wander about… though sometimes even I get confused.

I always think nowadays we don’t get pounced on and killed by some predatory creature but we do get cash or goods taken from us if we are not careful. But at least we live to tell another tale. Unlike with wild animals where one mistake may be their last.

Your Christmas gadgets aren’t getting much cheaper this year

22 Nov

there is this reblog facility in wordpress which i have a fancy to try. just to see what it is like. and this post about the price of laptops is one that i want to comment on.
the price has not changed much, still about £300 , but the specifications have bettered considerably. so just comparing the price does not tell the whole story.
now for the same money which i bought my laptop 5yrs ago, i can get one with 4G RAM, and 500GB HDD. compare that to my old laptop which i am still using 1GB DDR2 , 120G.
however, the old laptop still has plenty of life left in it, so i dont need to change. i am waiting to see what more i can get. like there is now on offer £225 for a google chrome laptop. and another an acer costing £199.
http://www.google.co.uk/intl/en_uk/chrome/devices/landing-acer.html

there are so many choices now, and they are getting cheaper. and the technology is by passing the need for big RAM or HDD. the only thing i dislike is the size of the screen. i like my present 15″ screen.

this is because i dont carry it around but use my laptop at home. so size and weight or battery life is not a important factor for me. though power usage is, so i wonder if long battery life means it uses v low power, or is it just a powerful battery that can keep up.
but all this is not enough to get me to replace my old laptop. until my laptop gives up the ghost, i will carry on using it.
now there is smart phones to compete as well. but again to me they are not desireable as they have very small screens and keyboards so i cannot touch type with them.
but i know nowadays no one learns to touch type anymore. they know how to type using thumbs of both hands instead.
