food bargains

4 Dec

london 8.14p 3C dry wednesday 2019

i have just got back from the tesco, to search for bargains. it is a mild night, even though the thermometer says 3C, but it was windless, so not cold at all. of course you still have to wear sensible clothes.

when i went to the tesco i did not think there will be many bargains, and went hoping to buy some veg. i even took out my frozen pork, to thaw, before i went to the tesco. thinking to cook it with the veg i hope to buy from tesco tonight. i returned it to the freezer when i got back as it would be redundant.

but tonight i got lucky, they reduced the mincedbeef to 62p, 500mg. and two were 5% fat , the other two were 15% fat. normally they sell for £3.75, and £4.65 respectively. so by rights if they are reduced by a quarter, it would be about 90p, £1.15, respectively, which are prices i would not buy so much of. so it was lucky that they went down to as low as 62p. so i bought 4.

two i froze, one i shall cook and the other one i told simon he can have to cook however he likes. so he is now happily in the kitchen cooking his. haha.

its been some time since i got such bargain meats. and i got some veg reduced too, mushrooms and celery and lettuce about 20p each. it is pot luck really as to whether they have any bargains to reduce or whether  u arrive at the right time and whether there are others hanging around looking for these bargains. but i might go more often on wednesdays.

it does make me enjoy my life a lot. these are simple pleasures really, to get things at a bargain price. it appeals to my  thrifty nature. and there is also the pleasure of deciding how to cook it, so many different ways to cook the meat, and all very nice to eat.

simon gets his kicks from watching snooker too. there is a live program of the snooker contest on now on the tv, but he is busy in the kitchen cooking, so is missing it. ha. i find it very boring really. but well, he likes it so he can use the tv to see it.

i am not sure if there are other tv programs tonight i want to watch, but i am not that obsessed with watching them. i circled only one program, at about 9pm, about pensions, some crisis or other… not that it affects me, haha.

earlier, i went to take my circuit class, the classes are getting busier, 7 of us there today. one of us have his wife attending the ladies class that was before us, and they are really busy, with so many ladies doing it. he said they have been married for ages. 50yrs and got two daughters in their late 40s, but only one granddaughter. he got married at 20, and so did she. but his daughters are not interested in having children, which is unusual, because when people marry so young, they tend to like having children, dont they and have huge families. he says he has 8 siblings, not all survive.

simon is making spaghetti bolognese with his mince beef, and i am having some of it now. quite nice to have, esp since i am quite hungry.

london 6.05pm 23.8C cloudy (high of 25.8C) thursday

hmm, i see wordpress is changing the appearance of the editing bar that used to run across the page in two lines before but now they have made it into one line and it is a very long one, runs out of my screen in fact so that you have to use the scroller to move it along.

its cooler today, and very pleasant in fact. i prefer it like this. i did not have any hay fever, though one of the chinese guys is suffering from it now. strange when this cooler weather should bring the pollen down. he said he had hay fever once, and then it went away for a long time, but now he is starting to get it again.

went to a meet up of ex lyc members, a club for chinese-caucasians that have long closed down but the old members still meet up to talk of old times. though now the topic tends to be old age concerns like death, strokes, disease instead of love life. still, it was nice to chitchat. and to meet the other chinese guys who i have not known when i was at the club in its heyday.

afterwards three of us chinese guys went to chinatown to buy stuff. one bought me to ‘see woo’, as he wanted to show me their fresh meat section. it is new, because i have not seen it before. full of fresh stuff even live crab, live lobster… anyway i did not buy anything. he bought fresh chicken livers… then we went on to ‘new loon moon’, me to find if they have any reduced instant noodles. which they have at 10p each for 70mg packs. and these have different flavours too. i bought 15. (and have eaten one as soon as i got back, red curry one and it is very nice indeed.) there was lots of it, so u will still be able to get this bargain if u go now. as usual, the reason why they are selling it cheap is because they expire next month.

quite a lot of variety. though sometimes one must not get too carried away with all these labels because they might all taste the same. haha. but the first one i tried, the red curry , is very nice.

added. 8.59pm 23C dry . went to the tesco to buy reduced foods. it is pot luck really, sometimes i get nothing but today there were loads of mince beef reduced. 750mg to 75p, (from £5)at 5%fat too. though next to it was 15%fat 750mg from £3.50,for 88p, and i bought that too even though it is not as good a bargain. there was also   500mg angus beef 15%fat minced at 60p. i bought that too. ah well, it just goes to show the power of association. when two things are side by side, and you are not paying attention. still, i got lots of minced beef now in my freezer. i also got lamb liver for 29p. after seeing my friend buy chicken liver, i too was starting to crave liver. i thought i will only be able to find bread reduced today, so all that meat is a bonus. i got wholemeal bread800mg for 5p, and two loaves of 400mg each for 4p each. i went at about 8pm. so much of these things are pot luck. if no one went earlier to buy these things, and so clean the shelves before u get there;  or the shop dont reduce the price until very late, so all the bargains are snapped up before you get there , you can sometimes come back empty handed.  but today was rather a feast of bargains.

it is similar to the time when i found so many chillis on sale. i have since eaten some of them, and they are really very hot. i cannot imagine the british liking these chillis, they are so hot, maybe that explains why so many were unsold, necessitating them to drastically reduce so many of them when their sell by date arrives. those chillis are from kenya and indeed i am pleased to see some countries  still retain the species that produce hot chillis. local chillis are very mild, actually, too mild. like the garlic, so mild that it is useless really…

26 Feb

london 11.17am 7.8C friday 2016. sunny

it’s the tgif day. (thank god its friday). i myself dont consider it different from any day, but when i was working, it is a special day. it marks the start of the weekend. i wonder in malaysia they will take thursday as the tgif day. they will call it tait, (thank allah it is thursday).

now everyday is a tgif day for me. i was in the library earlier and everything seems like normal. there is no clue to this day being so special during the working hours. it is after work, that you  get an idea of the difference.

long queues of traffic to get out of london, for eg. are they all  people who go to the country for the weekend? i wonder how many do that nowadays, have a country house to go to for the weekends, surely not many? then who are those people who are clogging up the motorways on the friday getaway  these days?   the motorway is always jammed on a friday afternoon. maybe they are all commuters who are making an early getaway home haha.

i remember long ago, when i wander around chelsea, the kings road, knightsbridge in the weekend, you do notice a certain empty feel about the place. huge gaps in the resident car parking bays, for eg.  i dont think that is so now, as most are foreigners and many of them dont even live here during winter, whilst in summer the place is jumping even in the weekends.

for me who lives here all year round, i dont notice the difference between weekdays and weekends. not now anyway and not in my area. granted my area is not the posh side. it is full of council flats and ex council flats. this little enclave used to be a labour stronghold, just behind the tate britain; until the flats gradually got sold and now it is a conservative safe hold. haha. i have seen the transition, and i think most of us approve of the conservative council, they have kept the council tax the lowest in all uk, for years… and that is a good thing as far as us council tax payers are concerned. haha.

i read in an article from a brit who lives in newyork, telling us what he/she dislike about new york, and it seems you are forced to buy  eat out , everyone does it. and it seems it is because buying the ingredients to make the dish is so much more expensive than just buying it all cooked by some eating place or other. it works out cheaper…thank goodness it is not the case in london. it is still very much cheaper to buy the individual ingredients and cook it yourself rather than buy out. this is because we in london can still buy  really cheap fruits and veg and basics. this even in supermarkets like tescos, sainsburys which have branches in the rich part of london as well as the outskirts. they are catching up on lidl and aldi, which are based far outside the centre.

you might say how sad that u cannot buy affordable cooked food from eating place, but actually u can, but even if they are affordable they do cost a lot more than just cooking it yourself. a macdonalds big mac plus fries can be as low as £1.99. but u can get make one yourself for even less. it seems this is not the case in new york. for some reason their grocery stores dont seem to have competition, so can charge high. or the people there dont have flats which make cooking easy, or they share with so many others it is not practical for all of them to cook, so they buy food from outside. takeaway must be a huge business in new york. even their sitcoms shows people buying out at the drop of a hat. in those small chinese style boxes that dont seem to carry a lot of food. and might leak gravy… which suggests that they dont have food that got much gravy or sauce. so their curry must be dry…

normally a 400mg basic mince beef is 1.90, and u can make 4 or 5 burgers … or if u are like me, yesterday i bought a 600mg mince beef from tesco for 50p, it can be even cheaper than that.

not that i make burgers out of it, i decided i would make a curry mince beef, it takes so much less effort and time to cook. and mincedbeef curry on rice, or bread, or mash potatoes, is just as delicious if not more so than a burger.

another gripe of new york, is that u cannot see the blue sky … and it hit me that in london the sky is seen very easily. and being able to see blue sky i think is one of the hidden joys of life. it such a small thing, but i find it makes me very happy to be able to see it.

another gripe in new york is rats/cockroaches in people’s flats. too hot in summer and too cold in winter. london dont have any of those. or rather if they are cockroaches or rats  around, i dont see them. haha. in all the time i have lived here i have never seen it in the flats or bedsits that i stay at. i have seen mice walking  between the tracks of the underground , and they look very cute, because they are so small. though that was a long time ago, and they might have gone now;  but no rats.

view from london

17 Sep

I hope everyone is enjoying their life as I do.
Here in London the season is changing. It is rather nice to watch the annual show… autumn coming round. So far the trees are still green, but there is a lot more rain of the drizzly sort.

Even though it was raining and quite heavily too, I was out today, to forage for bargain meat at the supermarket near me as well as just to get out of the flat for a change.

I went to the nearby hotel where a property developer was showing their plans for 9 millbank, a rather imposing block overlooking the thames and overlooking the gardens of the  house of parliament. These offices have wonderful unobstructed views of the thames and were built by ICI, and they are going to turn them into flats. On the other side of the road from this block is the offices of MI6. this area is full of such developments… offices being turned into flats.

here is a google streetmap view of it

I saw lots of mince beef which have to be sold today … that means they will have to be reduced. The first time I went, it was reduced from £4 to £2.50, minced beef less than 20% fat. whilst the basic minced beef(less than 23%fat) was reduced £3.85 to £1.50. They were 750mg. But I thought they will be reduced some more as the day goes by, so I returned at about 5pm, and they were reduced to £1.65 and £1.11 respectively. So I bought the cheaper ones, I bought 3packs.

And divided them into six portions and freeze 5 whilst I cook a beef bolognaise with the rest.

added. 20.33. went again to get bargain bread, bought 2 warburton white loaves for .34p each.(simon will be pleased.haha) on the way back went into the tesco and saw the beef reduced further. £1.20 and .85p, so i bought another one of the 85p. there seem to be a glut of minced beef, because i saw a lot dated tomorrow being reduced as well.

I try not to eat a lot of meat but it is nice, now and then, to eat meat.

If left alone in the freezer these will last me a long time, but I know simon will eat them. It is a pity because he has high blood pressure and should be more careful with meat eating or overeating. Not to mention when i want to eat them, they are gone. haha.

Ah well, his soul wants it.

I have a friend who I occasionally chat on the phone and he does not like my viewpoint , that their souls wants it. i think because it implies that whatever happens to them is what their souls wants. and i think many people balk at that… it makes them seem so unfeeling and callous at the plight of the poor, or unfortunate.

He says it makes me appear unfeeling and callous of the feelings of others implying it is all their fault. I am sure he is right, in that it makes whoever holds these views to appear in a bad light. Haha.

But I don’t mind what others think of me. To me the soul wants to experience life, and if it wants to experience deprivation, anger etc it will bring all those about. Asking other souls to come along and do them in and give them the chance to experience these feelings.

So it is not so much asking for it, as wanting to experience it.
My soul do not want to experience all those feelings of anger, or jealousy or fear, or righteousness or poverty or debt or having really bad relationships with other human beings , that is why I don’t have those things happen to me.

I like experiencing happy feelings and so I get them.

And getting food bargains like these haha. They are very small things, and you would think what a small thing that can make me happy… my life must be really dull if this little bit can make me happy. Haha. but my soul wants it.
Most would say you ‘do you want me to be happy? Nothing less than winning £5million (no wait make it £100million) will make me happy’. Perhaps they mistook it for greed… i think if u want to be happy u must not be greedy.

I laugh of course, because really the happiness u get from these tiny things, (like seeing a beautiful sunrise or sunset , or just seeing blue sky overhead makes me happy)is wonderful and stays with you for a long time.

So now I got a good supply of meat. I shall be going later to the other supermarket to see if I can get a new supply of reduced bread. Haha.

Simon has eaten the ones I bought. I know he likes those Warburton white bread… that is why I bought them when I saw them reduced to 34p, but normally I prefer wholemeal bread. Not least because I know simon don’t like them and so I can at least get the chance to eat them as he wont deplete them in the freezer.

I try not to eat too much bread… I know it is not fashionable but I think bread (and milk, or cheese) are not really very good for you. I daresay it is one of those silly things that u get in your head sometimes. I don’t really have a scientific reason as to why bread and dairy products are bad for you. With cheese I just don’t like that they are so salty. But bread and wholemilk can be really addictive… esp whole milk on cereals which I have a feeling is not quite as healthy as they make out.
But of course, I have a easy attitude to these things. If I get the chance, now and then I do like whole milk with cereals. And even making porridge out of whole milk gives the porridge a really rich taste. If I do have milk I want the whole milk, not the skimmed ones. To me skimmed milk is a big con. Haha.

But life to me is just eating in moderation, of the things I like rather than eat a lot of them all the time.

Deliberately depriving myself of these things now and then seems to me quite good for my soul. I think that must be why people fast. It is a way to deliberately deprive oneself of food. I think it is a way of mimicking nature. Because in nature, animals experience feast and famine, and that makes their bodies cope with the natural cycle of feast and famine.
With our modern life, where we can get food all year round, and in abundance, there is no feast and famine, anymore… and I think that makes us prone to obesity and all the diseases that comes with it. People just eat all the time and a lot of it.

By fasting, we try to bring that balance into our lives so that the body can use up its reserves of fat and hence you can maintain a good balance between obesity and starvation.

Anyway it is just a theory of mine, to explain why fasting is a good practise.

I practise a modified version of it throughout my life… rather than do like the muslims do, allocate a month for fasting and not eat anything between sunrise and sunset.

That method makes for real binge eating in between. Or at least that is what I would think, but I am sure a lot of muslims will tell me it is not so. But it is interesting that in Malaysia, during the month of Ramadan, the malay food stalls are just full of really lovely foods that u never see the rest of the year. They sell them after the sun set. That must be a great temptation to binge eat surely?
