tv guides for the christmas and new year.

20 Dec

london

i wonder if other countries have free tv guides given away by all the major newspapers today.

here in uk , we get these free 13day tv guides to what is showing over the holiday period given away by the newspapers.

what is surprising to me is that there are tv magazines which people can buy, like the radio times costing £3.60 , one of the many listings magazines on sale.

what makes people buy these rather than just get one of the many free guides given away by the newspapers?, and even as recent as thursday when the online tvguide.co.uk gives out a printed magazine of their listings.

i nearly did not get that copy because when i went to the pimlico station to get it on that day there was none to be had. and even when i went to victoria station, expecting piles of them there was none. luckily i saw a copy face down on the floor in the station concourse, and on the ground near a pile of rubbish bags on the road from the tesco supermarket… so i got two copies of it … haha. but today there are so many free copies from all the newspapers that there is no need to buy them. and they are giving away a free pdf online for everyone to download. it is quite difficult to view it as a pdf file. much easier to see it as pages in a magazine. though personally i prefer the tv guides given free by the newspapers.or u can just go to tvguide.co.uk and see the listings.

so i am well prepared for the tv viewing over the holiday period.

one of the nice things about living in the uk is the tv programs over christmas and new year are very varied.

they do put on an effort to give us a nice selection of stuff. and you dont even need to subscribe to a paid channel, because the free channels are just as good. and now that i got a youview box we can get the HD versions too. at first i thought the youview box which comes free from the talktalk subscription was a waste of time, but the HD (high definition) is rather nice.

simon told me recently that it has been a year since we bought the HD tv screen (and he only realised it is a year when the free one year warranty expired and he was asked whether he wants to renew) but it has only been 6months since i got the youview box so we have only been able to watch the hd effect on our big screen for 6months.

at first i thought with the youview box, i could record or see films after they are shown, but it is not so. i still could not record or view the films esp the late night films after they are shown.

perhaps it is my fault, because i switch the box and the tv and my wifi off over night. ah well, nevermind, as so many films sounds nice when u read the review but are quite boring when u actually get to see them.

added. the postman came just now and i saw there were two large envelopes and when i opened them i saw they contain two calendars from calendarMe which i wrote about some time ago. i never expected them to send me the calendars, as i thought you have to order them, and expected they will charge u for it.

so it is a pleasant surprise to see i got two calendars, one from the male section, the other from the female one. haha. well thanks to marcel, from three.co.uk

i am going to ask john, my friend from poole who also made a calendar when i told him of it. i wonder if he got a calendar too.

library and newspapers

23 Nov

london sunday

i just feel like writing something. so i shall.

today has been raining all day, usually i dont go out when it rains, but i want to go to the library to read the sunday papers, and i found paddington library has all the main broadsheets and they start at 11am.

most libraries just buy one sunday paper, usually the sunday times, but not this library. and it has a toilet too. just dont take it away (not the toilet, the papers). or else they warned they wont buy that paper anymore.

added.8.12.14 the toilet is closed ‘out of order’ it says.

i dont understand why anyone would take these papers away. just read them. even then, nowadays the contents are not so good as in the past. i find i just skim through a lot of stuff, the magazines, the home sections, gardening, travel, business, in fact practically every section except the main newspaper.

i dont think the sunday papers are good value for money. not that i buy them of course. haha.

you might ask why i dont read them online, but the times has a paywall, and so u cannot read the times online for free…also you dont get all the articles featured on the print edition online even for those papers that allow u to read them online free.

not to mention if there is any free offers, u wont get that online. not that the free offers are that easy to redeem.

for eg, on saturday, the telegraph gave a voucher for  a free robertson marmalade to pay homage to the opening film of paddington bear, but it can only be redeemed in w.h.smith and when i went to 3 branches they dont have it. and the whole offer is valid only for that day. so that offer is a bit of a bummer really.

it did give me an excuse to wander around london on the buses looking at the crowds thronging the oxford st area and westend from the upper decks of the bus.

so many people about but not many carrying shopping bags, except near primark. it is very popular … primark. so maybe nowadays there is no stigma to getting presents from primark.

but this is sunday, and i decided after the library to go to the tesco in vauxhall to buy some basic stuff , like milkpowder, basic washingupliquid, and basic porridge oats. it was raining, but i have run out of those basic stuff…and i thought i shall get back straightaway from the rain, but realised today is the last day of the morrison’s chicken offer so decided to go to morrisons in camberwell, to buy their chicken.  i bought 2. and also a shoulder pork £2.45/kg.

one of the chicken is now cooking as a curry. the other joins the other one I bought a few days ago in the freezer.  but when i was in morrisons, i see they have chicken 3 for £10 and they weigh 1.7kg. so not much more than the specialoffer chickens i bought. i think if they are more than 1.9kg it is just as same cost as these chickens i bought.

that is a good thought in the future when i want chicken and there are no £1.75/kg offers. but i have a feeling i wont buy them but buy the sainsburys frozen chicken pieces at £1.60/kg. instead.

they are £4 for a 2.5kgpack. the only good thing when you buy whole chicken is that u get the breast meat, which weight for weight is better value than thighs and drumsticks which make up the frozen chicken pieces pack sold by sainsburys.

ah well, it is just one of those small details that us savvy frugal shoppers have to weigh up in our deciding which to buy. it is not a difficult exercise.

but i am sure for all vegetarians all this is rather academic as they will not be buying meat.

i just ate the curry chicken and it is delicious, so much so that i went back for a small second helping. simon came back from his mum’s at about the same time and got a helping too.

my life is very nice these days. no big drama which is how i like it.

john lewis membership card

7 Jul

london

I am at the library and charging the chromebook and i have read the telegraph and the times and glanced through the daily mirror (the latter because they sometimes feature the special offers by supermarkets which enable me to get down there and buy it before it runs out).

this library dont have the mail. that newspaper also have adverts by supermarkets. it was the one where i found out about morrisons latest chicken offer of £1.75/kg. i bought 4 that time, and roasted two and cut up the other 2 and freezed them. at that price they are the same price as frozen chicken pieces except they are better as they have breast meat.

one advantage of reading the actual newspaper instead of online is the adverts of these special supermarket offers.

there are the guardian and independent newspapers too in the library  but i had enough of reading for now and thought i shall write a post instead.

So u must be asking what is all this john lewis thingy then? This morning i got the john lewis membership card sent to me by post after i got an email from them asking me to join. I knew of this membership card sometime ago and wanted to join it for its free cake and coffee once a month. haha. but for some reason i could not find it online.

this email came after i spent £230 on the chromebook last month in their john lewis store in westfield shopping complex in stratford.  i wonder if that is the reason why i got that email. i was thinking i could have put that purchase on the card if i had it then.

there dont seem to be any advantage to having the card apart from the free cake and coffee and even then it is only once a month .they said they can monitor us and give us special offers according to what we buy… which is certainly not calculated to entice people to join does it? they said each purchase earns an entry for each £1 spent to a monthly prize draw which is a £250 voucher to spend in john lewis.

i have a waitrose card but that card does give better value as it gives u free coffee everyday and also 10% off all purchases. Anyway, in the letter they sent me, in an envelope that looks like a cd case, i got 3vouchers , one each month till sept to use for my cake and coffee. i am looking forwrd to those. haha.

I recently went into their store in oxford st, and saw the cafe on the top floor, and it was rather nice. too bad they dont sell the security lock for my chromebook otherwise i would buy it now and use my membership card. (but since i now cannot find any less than £10 unless i go online, i doubt i shall buy it now).

i wish the chromebook has a slot with a hidden hole, so we can use our own chain or lock instead of having to buy a special lock to fit the custom made socket in the chromebook. but i shall keep an eye out for a security lock that costs less than £10 in the shops.

its not really a big concern, as the library is quite safe to leave things alone for a short while. and there is always the option of putting the whole thing, adapter(still plugged in the charger socket) and chromebook inside a bag and lock that and secure the bag to the table. so i guess you can prevent someone stealing the adaptor which must cost a bit if you have to buy it on its own. I mean the only reason why anyone wants to leave the chrome book unattended is when  you are charging it in a public space and the security lock do not safeguard the adaptor.

other than that there is nothing i want to buy in john lewis. in fact, i remember looking for the price tag in their sports clothes section and could not find any. they make it hard to find the price.

i picked up a pack of ankle socks , 4pairs all of different colours, and could not find the price. so i asked one of the servers, a lady who looked like she is a supervisor, rather than a shop assistant, and asked her and i made a comment saying i hate this store for making it so difficult to find the price. she agreed with me as she could not find the price on the tag either; and went away with the socks to find the price and came back and said it was £10, and i said i feel real embarrassed having to ask you for the price. it makes me feel the store is hinting that if you have to ask the price,(and here i can see her nodding as she knows the saying well)  you cannot afford it.

maybe it is a temporary glitch because it was a few days into their sales, and these socks may have been brought from outside ( as special purchase) and not their usual goods. anyway i doubt i will buy them as ankle socks are £2 for 3 pairs in primark.
