pedestrianisation of oxford st is cancelled.

8 Jun

london 8.51am 15.2C sunny friday 2018

i was very surprised to see this headline today, that the pedestrianisation of oxford st is cancelled. i thought pedestrianisation of the street was inevitable. they all talk of it as if it is a done deal.  even though for selfish reasons i would not like it. it is a luxury to be able to get a bus direct to where u want to go in oxford st, or get from one end to the other by bus without needing to walk away from it to the next street to catch a bus.

but westminster council has said they will cancel it. it seems the residents think the same way as me too, for it seems they objected. i did not vote, as i dont live there and i wont be affected. also i am not sure either way which is better, no traffic or keep it with traffic.

if they wish to reduce traffic pollution , it might not work, as they will simply transfer the pollution to wigmore st , at the detriment to all those living there. as it is , there are very few residents living on oxford st itself so if u are going to have a polluted st, might as well make it oxford st, haha. as to shoppers being put off by the pollution, maybe not, after all, shoppers dont stay long, nor do they go there every day to shop.

maybe reducing the number of buses that go through oxford st might be the better option.  and they have done it, they have cancelled bus routes 73 and c2 which normally goes through oxford st to victoria, by getting them to terminate at oxford circus. and a better way is to changing the way  buses run , get them on electricity rather than diesel.

would people stop shopping in oxford st if it is fully pedestrianised? i think some of the businesses there might be afraid that making it people only will destroy it as a shopping st. somehow i feel a street becomes more dead when u stop buses going through it. if u are laden with shopping do u really want to have to walk all the way along it, rather than be able to get a taxi or bus? or walk to the next street a block away to catch a taxi or bus? it just seems a lot of effort , esp after you are tired out allready walking so much whilst shopping. making it pedestrian only means hanging outside in the street is more pleasant, and the unexpected consequence is that you get people not going into the shops but hanging about outside. you will attract a certain kind of people, people who use it as a place to promenade and walk about to meet and greet friends… not something you want for a shopping st, because you want people to go into the shops and buy stuff.

Three Of Britain’s Most Dangerous Pedestrian Crossings Are On Oxford Street | Londonist

Three Of Britain’s Most Dangerous Pedestrian Crossings Are On Oxford Street | Londonist.

not really surprising. my bus often crosses that street, and i have seen the behaviour of pedestrians. there are so many of them, so inevitably they make their own rules. when traffic is stuck, they cross the street even when it is red for them.

i cannot really blame them, esp when so many are foreigners and as a tourist myself, when i am in a foreign country i too dont really know the rules, and just follow others, and if one person walks across when it is red, many automatically follow.

now the pedestrian lights have a count down, which is much better in telling how much time u have to cross it. not sure if they have installed that in the oxford st crossings. it would help.

added 3pm, i have got back from there. went there after the library to see what is happening in st christopher place, which is just off oxford st, near debenhams. they are doing some kind of charity event , sun was shining and everything looks summery. a lot of comments say they should pedestrianise oxford st, but i was really glad for the buses. it brought me right there, and after i had wandered around selfridges (£330 for a hoodie jacket, prices have really gone up since i last was there , 5yrs ago i think). it is just very nice to go to the bus stop for all buses going to picadilly circus, separate bus stops for buses going left  to kingscross and others going straight on to tottenham court road and holborn.

there were so many buses going right to picadilly circus, it is like a chauffeur service, u can get one so easily, and you can just enjoy the ride not having to fret at the slow progress, as the meter is not ticking away. the traffic was moving well, it consists of only just buses and taxis, no private cars. so i am not in favour of making it pedestrian only.

it is a long walk to get from one end of oxford st to the other, so buses to take u from one end to the other is just great.  after exhausting yourself trekking all over the department stores, you will be glad of them.

events comes around every year in a very predictable way

7 Nov

most things comes around regularly every year and it seems people like it. it is predictable and familiar.

so yesterday it was the switchingon of the oxford street lights for christmas. it seems quite a crowd went there to see it, though from what i saw of the lights decorations when i was there in the day it looked very plain.

just white globes strung across the street. maybe it looks better when they are lit up. i got a look at the picture of it when it was lit, and it still looked like white globes. i thought they might give it some colour and light them up with mulitcoloured lights.

and i got an email from john lewis telling me of their new christmas advert and saying i can be among the first to view it before it gets aired. maybe they hope i will put it up in facebook or something. some people have said they are moved to tears by it, but i guess i am more cynical. haha. it did not do anything for me other than to see it as a clever ploy to get children to pester their parents to buy things. i understand that it is an important time for businesses, as most of their profits are made during this christmas period and the run up to it. so good luck to them.

the more sensible people like me will just enjoy the sights and sounds whilst not contributing to it. haha. a freebie and i love freebies.

i am just glad there are other people who like spending on christmas. i am reminded again that it is the spendthrift ways of a minority that helps pay for services. there was a tv program last night about energy bills (it is another of those programs about heating that comes on like clockwork at this time of year) and people cannot afford to heat their houses.

it seems the profit is from a few who uses huge amounts of energy. they say the average bill for gas and electricity is about £1300 a year. i wonder how many people have that kind of bill. mine is £230 a year for electricity. i dont use gas.

so there must be quite a number who uses way more than the average and they are the ones who are paying so the people like me can get the service. if not for these high usage people,  supplying electricity or gas to households becomes so unprofitable that the companies will go bankrupt.

so all i am saying is thanks guys for using so much electricity and keeping  the companies in business.

in the tv program they mentioned and showed two families who live next door to each other, same numbers of people and houses, and yet one household pays £800 more than the other. they did not go into their lifestyles to find out why… that would be more interesting to me….instead they put their reporter in a room at 12C without any warm clothing and let him freeze and film him for us to see him shivering away. haha. and then warn us that will happen to us if we keep our rooms at 12C. they have not heard of warm clothing obviously. but u can see if not for those households who just either carelessly or ignorantly ring up huge electricity bills, and they must outnumber people like me who dont use much; we may not even have companies wanting to supply electricity to people like me, as it is a loss maker to them.

i cannot imagine what profit they can make out of me ( after all, half of that £1200 annual cost is incurred by expenses in supplying it) so if not for the many others who cannot bring their usage down i doubt they would be interested in supplying me.

many of those featured seem to think just because they have a medical condition, are old,  or have children , they must put up the heat or they will die or something. that is a fallacy. but no one dares tell them, because depand on it, they will die (of their condition but who is to say it is not brought about by it) and whoever gives that advise will be sued. that is why so many of these public annoucements dare not say it.

but if u use a bit of common sense, cold temperatures by itself wont kill you if u know how to keep yourself warm. afterall the eskimos are a good example of that. i am a good example of that too. i have not need to have any heating in my flat for years. and i am still alive and healthy. and i might add i dont even notice the cold nowadays.

tell me is it cold at this time of year? to me it is very mild.

a sunny day in london

3 Jul

really sunny day today so i went to oxford st and selfridges and tried out the new way of posting pics. pity i could not do it like this guy here who seem to be able to post pics with the original size.

with the pics here i was hoping they would make it one frame and have the pics run like a slide show. instead they open another window and show the pics oneby one , without any way of making it run like a slideshow and there is no way of enlarging the pics to their original size.

Added I have found the help page that tells me how to do the slide. as for the size, i think i shall have to take a really large size pic and post it and see if it will keep its original size. as usual when there is a change in format, users get upset because they dont know how to use it and it is human to  blame the new design instead of themselves for not troubling to find out how to do it. i can understand why users dont want to learn new ways to do things, because it is a lot of bother. haha.

all kinds of random thoughts

18 Dec

17.12.12 Monday.

Went to Brixton to the 99p store today to try to find socks for 99p. But there are none to be had. I may have to go to Bournemouth to the 99p stores there to get them. Or wait till the new year sales at primark.

Whilst I was at the 99p shop I bought Johnson’s baby oil 200mg. I have run out of baby oil. Very useful to moisturise the skin after a shower.

There is no rush as socks are something that have no urgency. Haha.

Seeing I was in Brixton, I went to the market to buy ginger and garlic.

Here in uk, the shops put out plastic bowls where they fill it with fruits, etc to sell all for £1 each.
I saw a shop selling quite a large amount of ginger in the £1 container outside the store. Must be quite the biggest amount I have seen.

The ginger was not only huge but there were two big bunch of them. So I bought it. And they are not old either which usually they are when they are put out like that in the containers to be sold at £1.

The shop which I usually go to, where the owner gives me a 10% discount is manned by a young guy this morning when I went there. He did not seem interested in my custom. So I figured I wont be able to get him to give me any discounts.

So I went elsewhere to buy the garlic. I bought 5 small bulbs for 69p at another store. Yet, his store was selling 7 bulbs of garlic for the same price. I know I should have bought from him, but it just goes to show how an uninterested shopkeeper can influence your decision to buy from him or not.

Then I stop by a store where I know they sell 6 onions for 50p. Quite cheaper than in the supermarkets for sure. There was no price notice and I would not have known about it. Except last time I visited I saw a woman gave him 50p for them, and that made me realise they are quite a good price. So I go there to get my onions now. Haha.

U might well say stop boring us with these prices of ordinary foodstuffs. I know it is boring if u don’t live here(in London or uk), or even if u do haha. But I like talking about it. Haha.

Most people talk of frugality, but not mention much about the small transactions like these, 50p here, £1 there may not sound like a lot, but they mount up.

But the most important thing they do is to tune your mindset to a less expensive mode.

For eg, if u are used to buying stuff at £5 or so, anything less and u think is a bargain. for me who buy things at £1 or less, only 20-50p will be a bargain.

That is why when I went to primark and saw their £5 packs of socks, my initial reaction was ‘that is cheap’ until I realise that it comes to £1 a pair of socks. That is not cheap. Remember these are run of the mill socks. And not even pure cotton either.

I think I can easily expect them to be reduced come the boxing day sales. I read that the tube is going on strike on boxing day. Hmm, might it be less crowded and so be worth going there on that day?? I might go there by bus in the morning and see what I can find. Might escape the big crush later on in the day.

And as they say, take care of the pennies, and the £ will take care of itself.

(added. Google provides an app called Finance41 f41 (finance-for-one, geddit?) and I have been using it to track my outgoings. It is the middle of the month and already I have spent £27 and it is from buying small items. Only two items are about £3 . One on pork2.8kg, the other on frozen fish1kg.

I know my expenses are very small, but I can see it is the little bits of 50p , £1 that mounts up. My usual spend a month is about £50-£60. It was half in the past, when I was less spendthrift, haha. I have loosened up a bit these days.)

I forgot to look out for a plumber’s plunger, to unblock my kitchen sink. For some reason, the cold spell had caused a blockage.

I have a plunger but the rubber tip is eroding and melting. It must be about 20yrs old. I like to make things last and really use them till their last dying breath. Haha.

I think there are no plungers to be sold in Brixton area. I have to go to balham and the hardware stores there. I saw plungers for sale there the last time I visited the area. Cant remember how much they cost.

Added 10pm. I got back from the supermarket having gone there hoping to find 10p bread. Well, I was lucky. When I arrive, the bread were there, by the entrance, and they must have been hauled there only recently, as there were plenty of hovis wholemeal multi seeded bread800mg for 10p each. So I bought 3.

It being Monday, the usual hordes of shoppers like me were not around so that might account for me being able to get these multiseeded bread.

There were lots of white bread, wholemeal own brand bread, etc too. Sometimes I buy Warburton’s white bread. simon likes them.

My freezer is not very big, so I cannot really stock up with a lot of bread as they take up so much room.

Added. Read this ,

I have been there years ago, mid 90s, and did wonder than why they have this peculiar law that insists that the centre of the town is not nudist. So we had this strange situation when we walk to the centre of town naked, and once there have to put on a slip of clothing. In an island that is supposed to be a naturist place.

I thought that part of ile du levant have been bought from the army which occupies the rest of the island and made into a naturist place and so is private land. But it seems the town centre is subject to French laws.

Why now have it come to arrests? those nudists have been arrested for being nude there Usually people observe the law, esp the locals who live and work there.

The local shopkeeper was fined for being naked in the terrace of his shop. And a local refused to cover up when told to.

So many places that are naked have been subjected to this sort of harrassment. In the past the law was usually unenforced. Now there seem to be some people who deliberately go there to enforce the law and make naked people forced to get dressed. It seems to be a sign of the increasing intolerance of nudity that seem to be the trend these days.

london life and thoughts

17 Dec

London16.12.12 sunday

A woman who has been awarded £2million for an error where the smear test did not detect the cancer in her womb, causing her to develop the cancer and to have a hysterectomy to remove the tumour; now says she wants £20million for not being able to have any more babies.

I find that is the trouble with our modern technology. It increases costs all round. First for enabling the mass testing, then to either miss the cancer, or misdiagnose it, and either way, being sued, and paying out huge amounts of compensation. don’t forget the cost of the operation too. Both remove the cancer, or the non cancer as the case may be.

It could have been the other way round for that woman, that she was misdiagnosed cancer , had her hysterectomy and end result , more money for compensation. Haha.

Makes you think that maybe medicine should not aim at trying to be god, and just treat as and when the cancer shows symptoms.granted some cancers will be detected late. But I figure it is just the soul wanting it. I for one don’t care if I get cancer and don’t know it and it is diagnosed late. In fact, I prefer not to know and just ask that the cancer remains symptomless till the final stage, then give me the symptoms, and then the doctors find it is cancer, and then I conk off soon after, having just time to clear up my affairs. I do like quick goodbyes rather than the long lingering deaths that cancer can sometimes bring.

I think it would be preferable to let things remain the same and not bring in all this prevention procedures. Or have a legal proviso telling all patients ‘u follow our advise at your own risk‘.

Nobody comes back to reward them for detecting the cancer, or saving their lives. People are so ungrateful. In fact some have sued doctors for saying they only have months to live, and then live for longer.

People!! Maybe that is why what ever happens to people I just say their souls wants it. I know that u can get sued if u try to help some of them.

Some helpful guy can make u worst if u got a broken neck and that guy try to move you. U can sue them if u survive, becoming paralysed because of his well meaning interference.

So that do -gooder make things worse whilst thinking he is such a do -gooder to want to help. And then gets angry when he gets sued. Haha.

Cant help but laugh, otherwise u can only cry bitterly or be very anti people.

Life!!! sometimes I think it better if we all just carry on our lives, some of us will get cancer , some wont, so be it.

If our souls wants it, the cancer will be diagnosed and found early. Otherwise if our souls wants it , it wont.

But letting things go its course and letting fate decide wont happen of course, with medical discoveries making us want to catch it before it kills us, or prevent it. Whilst all the time, nature will go its merry way we shall all die of something of other, and our souls will decide.

I know, this view is fatalistic. And not all will agree with me.

I prefer this way of looking at life, so I don’t worry about living or not. Haha let my soul decide.

But I foresee everything will go up in cost in future. That does not take a genius to forecast.

One wonders how people will afford medical treatment in future. Maybe only the v rich will get treatment. The nhs cannot afford some of those medicine anymore. Ah well, thank goodness I wont be alive to see it. Or the lack of money will stop me having the treatment and I conk off. haha. If that happens so be it.

Added. 16.12.12 I went to oxford st this afternoon, to primark. I thought of getting socks as so many of mine have holes in them, so it is time to renew the lot and get a new batch.

It was very warm in the store, because I was dressed in 3layers of clothing. I don’t know how those people in there can stand the heat. It was crowded with people. In fact many of them were sitting outside in the ledges of the window displays. Waiting for friends who are still inside shopping.

So busy, and this is a Sunday. No wonder primark is making such huge profits.

I went to the first floor to the men’s section to find that the socks were about £1 a pair being sold in packs of 5 for £5. There were 3 for £4, £2.50 etc. mixed fibres, 55%cotton.

(added 17.12.12 8.38am. Nice morning today in London. I read in this article that the weekend just past has exceeded the takings record last weekend. £200million. So I was in the middle of a record unfolding yesterday when I went to oxford st to primark. I did not go into any other store, because of the heat. I don’t know how these shoppers can stand the heat inside the stores. From the interviews in that article, all of the shoppers are 21yrs old. Haha. I think they were spending their parents’ money and foreigners. Otherwise how can they afford £800 presents. There was a banker age23. Are they recruiting them so young now?

I remember seeing the 99p store in Bournemouth selling cotton socks5 for £1, wish I bought those instead.

Anyway, I decided I would like to buy the 99p store socks here in London and will go to the one in Brixton, and see if they sell those socks there. I think I prefer cotton socks 5 for £1. Granted I expect for that price the quality wont be very nice, and from what I can see through the packing, there was some kind of football club logo on it. Haha.

But I don’t mind. I know ,it is very cheapskate of me, but I don’t really care for any fancy stuff and want the cheapest socks I can find. Haha. Socks are socks to me.

And no matter how expensive they are , socks always get holes in them. In my case, the holes are at the heels.

I think it is because my heels get chaffed by my shoe and so it gets worn out. So no point buying expensive socks as it is my way of wearing the shoe that caused the wear. I daresay if my shoe fits me better, it wont happen. But I like my shoes to be slightly bigger than my feet so my feet don’t feel so cramped inside them. I like to wriggle my toes and feet in the shoe.

These trainers, which are adidas, that I am wearing are ones I found at the recycling bins, about 2-3yrs ago. So far they are good for another year maybe. Haha. I shall have to keep an eye out for another pair for when these ones go kaput. So the fact they are slightly too big for me is purely due to circumstances. Haha. As usual I did not know I like them till I have been using them for so long now that I find it is just what I want.

I sometimes don’t know what is good for me, till I have them for some time and then It dawns on me that they are really very good and just right for me. It is serendipity at work. Or so I want to believe. Haha. Or maybe my soul wants it and so it attracts things to me.

Many times I find things, and keep them, not really wanting them, but some impulse made me pick it up and keep it. Then many months, or years later, I find they are what I need.

Does that happen to any of you? It happens quite often to me.

On another note, I read this in my wordpress reader of blogs that I follow. I ‘liked’ it even though I don’t really agree with him. It is rather a nice thought provoker. It basically says films etc seem to slag off Christians with impunity and people buy those films instead of boycotting them and so make the film makers more bold in slagging Christianity even more.
I did think he has made a good point there. If Christianity have been more bloody minded and call for a fatwa against the film maker as the islamists do, than maybe there wont be so many films so against Christianity. On the other hand I know the Christians and the islamists go for the easy target, like gays… we get so much flak from those two religions. But do gays call for a fatwa against these two religions? Maybe we should .haha. I think those who realise these two religions are hitting out against the most helpless, gays and women in society, fight back by making films that ridicule Christianity and make us laugh at them. Christianity in particular.

So far no one makes fun of islam , or rather those that do end up with fierce death threats.

Those muslims have learnt from the olden days of Christianity where they excommunicate and hang people for heresy to keep their critics in line.Muslim religion practises in so many ways are living in the medieval ages and it is not for nothing that their calendar is still in the 1400s.

So in one way, he is correct in asking why Christians willingly collude and buy films that mock their religion, but he should also mention that Christians in their turn mock and condemn gays. If u are going to mock , then be prepared to be mocked .

I know, it is the nature of Christians, and muslims, to condemn gays. It is in their teaching. That is why for any gay christian out there, maybe u should ask yourself why u believe in that god who is so much against u… why try to join a club that does not want you?
Either u change and become straight, or u have to give up that christian god.

Naturally those views above are my own, and should not be taken as the final word. Haha. I know they are a bit extreme, and I am conscious that it is only my view point. Maybe a christian gay will see clearly it is perfectly right s/he holds that being gay and christian are not contradictory and that s/he wont get his/er knickers all in a twist for holding on to such opposing views. His/er gay nature pulls him/er one way, his/er christian faith pulls him/er the opposite way. Somethings got to give…

But let us not get too angry about all this, because in the end, it is your life, and u can live it however u like. So if u want to believe 10 contradictory things before breakfast, do so. Haha except I will get away from you and not want to know anything about u as I don’t really like those kinds of people. Having said that, I still have a christian gay friend. He call himself a Christian, but he is not very religious. So maybe he just use the term Christians without thinking of the implications. Or he pick and choose his brand of Christianity.

I sometimes wonder why god tolerate so many different religions and gods…if I were the real god, I would smite all the others dead. No question and make it clear who is god around here. Haha.

either he is very tolerant, (which doesnot sound like him at all, considering the old testament is full of a jealous god who don’t want anyone worshipping other gods before him; or do u think that old testament god has mellowed a bit, or more likely irascible old men who write those things don’t have a monopoly on writing anymore now that we have the printing press. Haha.)

or it doesn’t matter at all. All paths lead to the same thing which may be nearer the truth.

Added.6pm.  westboro baptist church i hope will be outed as a hate group if this petition to obama succeeds. we are very familiar with the fatwa of the muslims, but christians are not above doing the dirty too.
