tabasco sauce is doing a promotion in victoria today

7 Dec

london 7.55pm dry night friday 2018

i met steve and his wife at the victoria station free giveaway by tabasco sauce company to promote their sauce. they hired a street food company that makes sandwiches, this time it is muffins buns and pulled turkey with an egg. we were given half of it and lots of small tiny bottles of the tabasco sauce. the sandwich  was quite tasty actually ,there were bits of crunchy bacon in it too which i like.

tabasco is trying to increase uses of the sauce, and getting people to buy it more by suggesting it is good for a after -clubbing drink or in food to overcome a hangover. its been quite a long time since i used tabasco.

i used one of their little bottles on a pork chop i cooked for dinner just now and i think it may find it hard to compete with the sweet chilli sauces that i am more used to. tabasco has more of a vinegarish taste than a sweet one. strangely, i dont find it very chilli hot. yet i had memories of it being chilli hot. i wonder if they had toned down the chilli.

the chef came out of his van to do a photo shoot, using a sandwich, (more of a burger really) with lots of layers so that it was nothing like what they are giving us. haha. but i guess that is artistic license. they were only doing it for 3hrs or so. its a raining day too. one have to be keen to want to go out on a day like this.

after the free promotion, i took the train to clapham junction, thinking of doing some grocery shopping in lidl and asda there. it is a real quick train ride from victoria to clapham junction. i had at first thought of taking the bus, but it would have taken a long time.

and i got caught in the rain when i came out of the clapham junction station. but it was quite close to the two supermarkets lidl and asda.

i did not buy anything at lidl, just took a lidl leaflet showing their reductions next week, starting from 20dec. and saw they are reducing veg to 29p. 1kg carrots, 500mg parsnips, 1.5kg potatoes… they also got brussels sprouts , but  i wont be buying those haha. but the others ,its good to know that they will be reduced nearer christmas…i shall be buying them.  it would be just right for the big holiday period around christmas and would be perfect to accompany  the chicken or whatever meat people will be roasting for their christmas lunch. but if we all know that lidl will be selling them for 29p, i am sure no one will be buying at the other supermarkets if they dont reduce their prices too.

and i got a nice reduced pork from asda. reduced from £9 to £5.50 , 2.2kg. it would be perfect for a roast, they even removed the rind from the fat, so that you can use it as pork chops. i divided it into 3 containers with a bit leftover for today’s dinner, and i freeze them for later, and it will last me at least a month. i wont be using it to roast over the christmas period; preferring to roast a chicken instead.

i wont bother to buy a turkey either. it is a large bird and is quite impossible for two people to eat it, without a lot of leftovers that will take days to finish. and it is pricey, because of its size really.  but also, there is a good chance of very cheap turkey after the holidays. and i can make a curry out of it if i can buy one reduced cheaply enough.

people say they dont like grocery shopping, but i find it very enjoyable, because i can find bargains, and reductions and also anticipate the dishes i can make out of them and looking forward to eating the result.

a simple electric all purpose gadget

16 Mar

london 6.31pm 13.6C thursday 2017

i am roasting a 1.65kg chicken i bought this afternoon at aldi £1.87/kg. i am using a electrical oven. a stand alone gadget , not the oven in my new cooker. i find my new oven uses up too much electricity to cook a chicken, so i am using this one which seems to be more economical. perhaps because it is smaller, as it can only take one chicken and no room for vegetables.

the brand is called kitchen m8. it is supposed to be a all purpose thing, can boil, roast, steam/slow cook, saute/grill,deep fry. seems like a miracle gadget. haha. there is no timer, so u just look at it and if it is done you switch it off. it is what i can use. now i am getting old, i dont really like anything complicated gadgets.

simon tells me he cannot get used to the smartphone he bought, so i asked him if i can have it. but i am finding it very complicated too. so not sure i shall bother with it. afraid that problem with his laptop, its windows, is still not solved. it is an unusual problem, a virus that gets and infects only his laptop and not either mine or my friend’s who uses the same router. yet that virus disappears from his laptop when he uses another router.  is that weird or not? or is it just his fxxking soul want to make his life difficult. i have a feeling that even if there is a virus there that is reporting all his actions to a unknown source, it wont be able to find out much if he goes into a https website. but simon is not convinced about that.

i have tried to contact my talk talk people, but cannot get through to their tech line in the online chat. the trouble is they are always busy and tells me to hang on, but when they do get to me, i dont know they are there, so their query is not answered by me, and they disconnect. added 11.4.17 tuesday. latest update, in the end simon could not get them either, and so he decided to just buy a new laptop. another windows. personally i would not buy another windows, seeing it was the one that failed to keep out that virus infection in the first place. his new one costs about £300 for 1 trillionG HD, and 2 million G memory. or something like that.

added 9.11pm 12.7C afraid the chicken did not come out well. it fell to pieces.haha and the skin did not go crispy at all. so it was a failure. dont think i shall use it to roast a chicken next time. though funny enough i recall it did a good roast early on when we first tried it out. so why it did not do so now is a mystery. or do you think it was a false memory that i have about it doing a good roast chicken. maybe we never roasted a chicken with it. i must ask simon whether we did. it is funny that i am now not sure if we did. ah well, looks like the only way to roast a chicken and get that lovely crisp skin is with the usual oven. i might do a curry chicken next time, since it has been ages since i did that. but for that i shall use my induction stove and i bet it will use up very little electricity and quicker too.

i know, my life is really very nice, if these are the things that i have to contend with. a chicken that did not come out right, it is tiny problems in the big scheme of things. but it goes to show that even though i have roasted chickens many times, if i want to experiment with a new gadget, things can go wrong. maybe that is why a cook when they find something that works stick with it. that may explain why some cooks stick to a recipe faithfully, rather than be like me, who is quite slapdash about following recipes. i get variable results of course, though all of them are edible. but i know my nature, i am too lazy to follow strictly any recipe or method. anything can do with me. maybe that is why i like the stir fry method. it can be very slapdash and still work out fine.

added 9.55pm 12.3C i just read an article in the tuesday (today is thursday) metro free newspaper about people’s usage of their smartphone. it seems making calls is the least common use for smartphones. it is 11th .

1 is texting, 2 email, 3 facebook, 4 camera, 5 reading news, 6 online shopping, 7 checking weather, 8 whatsapp,9 banking, 10 watching videos on youtube.

that might explain why i dont find a smartphone that necessary. i can do all those things much more easily in my chromebook. i suppose the whatsapp will be the most useful if i got a smartphone, but with simon’s i dont know how to get that app. he has not got it in his phone.

christmas turkey

15 Nov

london 2.58pm sunday 2015 16C cloudy

this turkey is free, i got it from a voucher from the mail newspaper as part of their points system, it required 2000 points , which normally i would exchange for a £5 gift voucher, but this turkey costs £9 , 3.8kg so i think it is a good bargain.

i know it is a bit early to be buying it , and u can delay till later but i wanted to eat turkey and i wanted it now. haha. also i think going this early i am able to get a heavier bird that is labeled small. because the voucher is for a ‘small’ turkey.

there were a range of sizes so i chosed the largest size in the freezer. i think they all cost the same. i am very pleased at this bargain, because i have lately been craving chicken, and this turkey is a good chicken substitute.

i dont roast the whole bird, because it is difficult to get a juicy bird if u roast it whole. i intend to divide it into 3, and roast one, soya sauce another, and curry the third. that way i get variety.

simon made a suggestion that i roast the turkey ( i was thinking half a turkey would do for 3 of us) on 24th nov when a friend of ours is coming to stay and we can have a roast dinner for him with the trimmings. simon said he will do the cooking.

i was afraid the turkey wont keep for so long, it will be more than a week. but he said it will keep if kept in the fridge. our freezer is too small to contain it or i would put it in there and take it out nearer the time. i dont know how long a frozen turkey thaws out. i am hoping it will be 4days. and that would mean only 3days in the fridge after thawing. we shall see.

roasting a chicken

18 Oct

london 9.44pm sunday 2015.

I read this method of roasting a chicken and thought it rather a waste of money. so much fuel spent. why cook it for 1.5hrs at 120C, then take it out and let it cool, while heating the now empty oven full blast on highest setting for 45mins, after which put in the cooled chicken for 15mins to brown it. why leave it full blast empty for 45mins? it is all a bloody waste of energy. if he wants to brown the chicken, why not put that oven to full blast for the last 15mins of that 1.5hrs at 120C. it makes me wonder if people have lost the skills and adding bits and bobs of their own.

i myself just season the chicken , open its legs, (that advise he gave about cutting the elastic that keeps the legs together is a good one, it shortens the cooking time. )and cook for 1hr at 200C. at the end of that time, leave the chicken dont take it out till 15mins later, so the remaining heat can continue to cook the chicken. the chicken will come out cooked and browned. and no fuss or bother. and u can roast veg in the oven at the same time too. i dont bother to pre boil the veg beforehand. just coat them with a bit of oil before hand by shaking them in some rapeseed oil in the roasting dish.

i think any method of cooking should try to use as little gas or electricity  to cook it as possible while producing a properly cooked dish.
