the gym experience.

18 Jun

london 7.46pm 22.1C (high 26C) sunny monday 2018

i took up the daily mail offer of a free 7day pass to a gym. i chosed one near me, in victoria, where i used to be a member about 10yrs ago. and i can say there is no going back to the old days. when i was a member there, it has a swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, and a lot of space . now it is much smaller and only have showers. there was no soap provided. no towels too. i paid £20 a month in those days, now you have to pay £37 a month. for not a lot. what is surprising is that they have other branches that cost £20 a month. this one cost so much and yet dont have any of the facillities that would explain the extra cost… and i can only assume it is the location, supposedly more central that explains why it costs so much more. they have a branch in south kensington that charged £47 a month. what extra do that branch provide? if they provide the same facillities , or lack of it, than it is hard to justify the extra cost.

but even after the fact that they dont provide anything extra in facillities, the gym was very busy when i went there at about 6.30pm. so it looks like the extra cost is not a deterrant to membership. i sometimes dont really understand human beings. why did they join this branch, instead of the others which are so much cheaper. its so crowded all the machines were being used. and its a monday too. i find it just too crowded to exercise , so i did not do so. just had a shower.  i was chatting to a chinese guy in the changing room who is a member there, and i should have asked him what is the attraction for him to join this branch.

the council gym is so much better, so spacious and nice showers with soap provided. and yet it doesnot appear to be so popular as these private gyms.

i went into the Marks and spencer store nearby, and see a lot of empty shelves. those hungry hordes of office workers have swept the food. they dont seem to be put off by the cost. that is why i think businesses have managed to keep going , the lunchtime profit from the office workers is enough to sustain them. these office workers are like a bunch of locusts.the cost is not a deterrant.

i was earlier in the tesco , a local branch near piccadilly circus, during the lunch hour, and it was absolutely jammed pack with these office workers buying their lunch. long queues snaking away from the tills, all trying to pay, as if it is free. (rereading it i know it is illogical, that last bit. but you get my point, i hope. haha) that store and many like it must make a lot of profit from just the lunchtime business.

added. 12.18pm 27.2C sunny monday 25.6.18. i never did goback to that gym to use it and use up the free pass.makes me realise i am not going to use those weights, so no point joining the gym.

the circuit training that i am using seem to appeal more to me. it is a supervised activity and because i am expected to go, i go. i read in my library a notice saying there is a yoga class for over 50s in a old age community hall near me, it is on wednesday too, and i might go and see if i would like it.

black friday

25 Nov

london 2.44pm 12.8C sunny blue sky. friday 2016

i suppose i must be of another generation where the word black denotes death and that something horrible has happened. that is what i always feel when i read  or see ‘black friday’ anywhere. but it seems this generation thinks of it as a great day, when it is time to splurge out, or that after today they are working for themselves rather than for the taxman, or that today is a day they start getting the profit.

well i thought i shall get into the mood of it and join them by buying something. but it was a half hearted attempt really haha.  i had thoughts of wondering what it will be like to own a smartphone so i went to the nearest carphonewarehouse at victoria, and looked at the cheapest thing on the wall display… an alcatel with 3.5inch screen . £49 to buy outright. a young kid came up to me, he was looking so young and asked me if he can help me. i asked if it takes a ordinary sim card… and he said i shall find out. and came back to say it takes a micro sim card. there is another size called a nano that is even smaller. so i thought oh well, that is that then, because i got a standard size one from talktalk which i am using on my nokia mobile.

then he said round the corner there is another carphone warehouse who could chop it to size for £2. that is news to me. u can chop it smaller? and sure enough, he showed me a picture of the standard size, with the actual chip pasted in the middle looking much smaller than the cardboard that fits the standard size slot. i suppose there must be some skill in cutting it , otherwise anyone could do it themselves right? but it is good to know that i could buy one of these smartphones without fearing my standard size sim card wont fit. or having to order a micro sim specially.

i suppose the nano one will have to be ordered specially . but i think only very expensive models like iphones , or the top brands will be using those. and if u got the money to spend £700 on them, u can afford to splash out on a nano sim, dont you think? but in the end i did not buy from them . even though he said u can pay just £19.99 and top up with £10 and it is yours. you dont have to use the sim, just use yours… and keep the other as a spare. but online i have seen one that you can buy outright for £39, and another which they say just top up with £20 and it is yours. and that one is 4 inch. i cant remember which online store i saw it, now. but i am sure it will pop up on my outlook express as an advert . haha.

the thing is i am not sure what a smartphone do. i mean apart from making like an ordinary phone, does it work like my chromebook? only smaller? and if that is the case i allready got my chromebook so why should i need it? are there other things that it will do that my mobile , and my chromebook separately does not? if so, what are those, and is it worthwhile to buy one?

questions, questions, and no one to answer them. maybe because the answer is oh just stop asking the questions allready, and just buy one and try it out. haha. maybe deep down i am just not convinced i want one.

added 10.45am 1 dec 2016. cloudy 3.9C. read this about more than 1million accounts breached , via android devices. 57% were in asia, 9%in europe. it then can access google accounts like google drive, google docs, gmail. it makes me hesitant about getting a smartphone, because if i get one i want an android device. the malware has not infected europe that much …yet. it might be if i get one i should go for the latest product as it might have better security. well, the main reason i got chromebook was for the security, and i am not willing to have to bother again with potential security breaches that would by pass my chromebook security  if i get a smartphone. so i shall postpone getting a smartphone for now. it affects

Android 4 (Jelly Bean, KitKat) and 5 (Lollipop). so another way of countering it is to get smartphones with android 6 marshmallow or higher.

this one is a porcelain horse that my friend covered with gold leaf to make for his father’s 90th birthday. it is to suggest he is still going strong like that horse, at the ripe old age of 90.

added. 10.49pm 7C dry . mustbe quite a eerie sight in central london tonight, seems there is a power cut affecting only soho and westend. certainly i was not affected. i am sure all those businesses there would have preferred they are not affected, as it is the busiest part of london.  it seems it started around 5pm, and lasted about 4hrs. the daily mail had some pictures showing the huge advertising board at piccadilly completely dark. and all the streets are dark. on a friday night too when people will be out and about on the start of their weekend revelry. the tube network was not affected, but the theatres have to cancel their performances.

how can my towel be dirty when i only use it when i am clean?

20 Nov

london 8.15am cloudy 9.1C friday 2015 (you would think it is cold, but the reality is it is not. take it from someone living in it, surprising not cold at all).

i wonder why we wash towels that often. by rights the only time u need to wash a bath towel is if someone else wants to use it. i saw this cartoon here posing that question. it was not answered. it makes me think that quite a lot of stuff we do seem to be dictated by habit. it seems to me it is getting it dry that is the important bit. no one likes a wet towel.

habits change

5 Jul

london 11.14pm. sunday 2015.

i see nowadays i dont have friends to hang out with. in the past, i have a group of us who would meet often and talk about nothing. and we enjoy doing that, haha. but now i see my life is quiet. i have lost all those friends who i hang out with. they have all moved away, or got boyfriends, or just got older and less inclined to hang around and chat aimlessly. i think talking nonsense and hanging around with other people seem to be something u do when u are young.

certainly i am older now and i dont like talking aimlessly and hanging around with a bunch of others. that might explain why i didnt cultivate another bunch of friends to hang out with to replace those old ones who left. i just dont seem to want to do those things anymore. its a paradoxical situation i find myself now. i want to make friends but all the past basis for friendship have gone. the past basis was that friends act as a support group , but now i am quite independent, dont reallly need a bunch of people to massage my ego, or me to massage theirs… so what to do?

i suppose one way to seek new friends is to find a hobby and get or join others who like the same thing. so i have to start finding out what i like to do. and try not to like things that are done alone. like reading…

there are lotsof things i discover that i like doing but alone…

there is a social group of gay guys who meet every wednesday in a coffee shop and the idea is that people chat to each other and try to make friends. i find i dont seem to enjoy that enough to go more often. i only go when my friend from slough asks me to join him. he seems to like going. he also likes to call me on the phone to chat…

i used to do that with another friend who lives in brighton, but i have stopped doing that now. funny how things i like to do, i find i dont like to do anymore. what is the reason for that i wonder?

i have heard of people having pen friends and they write regularly and keep at it for years. i dont think i would be that interested. i mean what do u talk about? esp to somone you have not seen or met.

when i was younger, i like chatting with others because i would like to know why the world is as it is. we would try to figure out why people do things that we hear of in the news, or talk of events that happen and what motivates those people involved in it. like for eg, now if it were in the past group gatherings we would most probably talk of the greek voting no … and speculate on what will happen. or talk of the things that george osbourne the chancellor will bring in his budget… cutting things and charging that… but it will be rather non productive talk as we cannot know how it will impact on others, nevermind ourselves, if it does at all. or talk of all the seemingly aimless killings that ISIS is doing… but all this talk has no aim, for there is nothing we can do about it, or even figure out why they do it. it can be rather frustrating to speculate on it, and futile exercise and makes us rather anxious actually , makes us thing the world is going to the dogs and quickly. come to think of it, when i was younger, during my student days we seldom talk of such things, we consider them  politics and in malaysia we seldom talk of politics… we talk more of religion actually , specifically the catholic religion, because i was a catholic then;  and philosophy, about ethics , about good and bad things that are done ….

now i dont have any interest in talking of those things anymore. now i just dont seem to want to talk of anything to others, instead i find i prefer to just write my thoughts in a blog, at least i dont have to listen to others views… selfish or what? haha. and i prefer to read of others thoughts in their blog, i dont have to respond nor agree or disagree… as it serves no purpose to comment on it… each person’s writings are personal to them, and do not need our approval or disapproval. that is how i see it anyway, and so i read others’ thoughts on the subject and either agree or disagree or even learn something new, but essentially there is no need to respond to it. that might explain why i do read a lot of blogs and enjoy them and follow them  but seldom make comments.
